Just out of curiousity, why does my bluray sound as good as a cd spinner? As I have heard bang and olufsen dvd player produce a very entertaining cd sound and also my mac mini playing from the harddrive into a dac, I keep wondering why? In particular I'm interested in the scientific reason.

How hard could it be If even a macmini can do it perfectly well? What would need to change to upgrade a bluray so that it sounds good with music replay?

They're designed to do a specific job. A CD player is all about producing high quality two channel music, nothing else. A Bluray player is predominantly designed to play Blurays, but has to play CDs, DVDs, incorporate picture processing, audio conversion (PCM) etc. Bluray players tend to be mass produced too, so cheap parts in a plastic box is the norm. That's not to say they can't sound good though, as the Oppo players are good examples of a Bluray player that many people have bought as a two channel source component. It can all be done properly, it just takes good design and money.

In theory they should sound the same.

Some reasons why they may not.

1 they do sound the same but you're inagining a difference

2 they're not connected the same way

?

Probably because the rest of your system will level things out. A chain is only as strong as the weakest link, so a super sounding DVD player will be limited by the amp and speakers.
I follow your reasoning but in my situation I dont think that's the case. The beolab 9 are quite pricy and very revealing of any source playing. The bluray is a midrange model.

@David: the oppo seems to be quite popular as a high end choice. I will try to demo it to see what I think. Are there any other brands you would recommend for music reproduction?

Better still: do you know of anyone who 'upgrades' bluray players to sound better?

When buying new, I'm more inclined to buy a streamer with bluray functionality than the other way around...

There are firms that upgrade players to sound better but you're not going to like their prices :)

Sorry but I don't know of any streamers with bluray functionality.

Probably not :) Will stick to a streamer then.
For a streamer I'm prepared to buy from 500 to +/- 1250 if the difference is enough.Still have to sell a cyrus dacx and will use the money as funding for something new.

For a bluray I find even budget players are fine for picture, but lack in streaming functionality or a good control app.

I had no idea what your budget was, however, as you have now stated it I would strongly suggest to look at the Oppo 105. Either the D or older Eu edition.

I use the 105eu and it is by far the best quality / most versatile bit of kit I have ever had the pleasure of installing in my system. So much so that my Stello CD transport and Stello DAC will be going up for sale very shortly. *yahoo* (Very much an Oppo fanboy).

I was using my panasonic 310 bluray for a cd player until i got a roksan cd player and the difference is big. Although at first the bluray sounded louder or more dynamic but that was not the case. Infact the extra detail from the roksa cd is night and day. Out of interest i swapped back to bluray and it sounded dreadful
