Quercus was born from the lineup that appeared on June Tabor's stellar At the Wood's Heart from 2005. Huw Warren, her longstanding pianist and musical director, invited saxophonist Iain Ballamy (who records for ECM with his group Food), whom he had played with previously in various live settings. Both men are seasoned jazzmen and improvisers. The trio hit it off and toured, developing new material as they went. This date was captured live in 2006. Obviously, this is not a jazz record in any normative sense. But this doesn't mean that jazz doesn't make its presence felt on these strikingly adapted traditional songs and standards. Of course, given that Tabor is the greatest living British folksinger, the music of the Celtic and British Isles traditions informs virtually everything here.

Some may find this recommendation strange. It's not his debut album. It wasn't nominated for a Grammy like all the other albums of his... bar the title track which in fact got a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional R&B Performance. But for me this was a major breakthrough both vocally and lyrically that made the last two albums what they are. Definitely worth a listen.

I listen to a lot of free jazz, avant garde etc. .

I thought the above was quite conservative :)

I prefer no Balkan turbo-folk in my jazz. Sorry. But you sure hit the spot with Itamar. Loved the full listen.

Midnight Special is a perfect complement to Back at the Chicken Shack, which was recorded the same day. Organist Jimmy Smith, tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, and guitarist Kenny Burrell always make for a potent team, and with drummer Donald Bailey completing the group, the quartet digs soulfully into such numbers as the groovin' "Midnight Special," "Jumpin' the Blues," and "One O'Clock Jump." Highly recommended.

The Lounge Lizards, led by neo-saxman John Lurie, were best known for their outsider approach to bop. This is perhaps their best work, filled with humor and a solid melodic sensibility. Marc Ribot's angular guitar and the complement of Evan Lurie's piano make the disc a particular delight. Madhouse jazz for the unhinged. *preved*

Incredible album, hooked on it. Great suggestion thanks.

"Despite the 80s reissue artwork, this is the 1965 UK Columbia Lansdowne stone classic, the highlight of the excellent Pianists composing career, a work up there with the great Prestige/Riverside Monk lps that inspire the playing style so prevalent throughout. The source material, Dylan Thomas' Under milk Wood was well known to British Children of the sixties as a staple of the school curriculum for decades, and the wonderful Argo lp of that full play was similarly infamous for its quirky originality and brilliance. Although less well known, the three other musicians shown to the sleeve front are also in five star form. I am reliably informed that the American musicians arriving to play at Ronnie Scotts back then were more than pleased by the quality of musicianship from the house pianist and whichever rhythm section he chose to go with him when Stan was house band leader at the club. Hearing this explains why that was so. All these works are composed by Tracey, and he pips the rock world to a degree by having such a well shaped Suite tailored to fit an album, two years before Sgt Peppers. There is not a wasted moment or duff track to this five star lp, a high point of British Modern Jazz of any era." - Mark Harrington

Tales from the Hudson

I'm not heavily into jazz but whenever I do fancy a wee listen I kinda go to this album...it's on spotify but missing some tracks but I got the full version via qobuzz.

Oh and I like a wee bit of weather report also on occasion..this is a very interesting thread though and I'm looking forward to making my way through whatever I can hear via Spotify and qobuzz.

Great work guy's.

Here is an unusual one for you all to try .

TRIO ELF 746

https://open.spotify.com/album/6bH029mdYSul0APEVV97CV

A German trio has a unique style in jazz with a small nod to the piano of Jacques Loussier ( imo ) , it's described as Drum 'n' bass 'n' piano.

I could listen to this all day, in fact I probably will. *biggrin*

A youtube vid for those without spotty .
