is this one of the best debut singles?

Well it appears to have had everything, and I mean everthing thrown at it, with the exception of one vital ingredient - soul.

I was blown away by the fresh sound, takes me back to my influences - The Who, Small faces, Kinks, Stax, Motown etc.

Some purists may call him a revivalist. Does it matter? not to me...

I clicked on to your link PP in the hope of finding something a bit special - sadly, not for me mate. However, that's a very first listen. It could be a grower.

As for best debut singles ever; the other night on Sky Arts HD, they were re-running old The Tube highlights. Terence Trent D'arby's "If You Let Me Stay". Wow! I remember seeing it for the first time all those years ago. Stunning and coming from without doubt for me, the best debut album ever. Sadly, he never kept it going.

Without even clicking the link I had a feeling you were talking about the Paperboy! I bought his last album on vinyl from the Bristol Show in 2009 (jeez, that's flown!) but I was disappointed with the amount of distortion on his vocals and assumed it was a bad pressing, so I bought it on CD. And it's exactly the same! I assume it must be deliberate but it gets a bit annoying after a while.

It's quite popular now, there's a couple of tracks on Plan B's new album that evoke the same era, but I haven't bought the album as I don't know if the rest of it is of a similar ilk (be warned though he does do a bit of rapping in the middle, I don't mind it but it might not be your thing).

If you like Eli Paperboy Reed though, you should check out Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears, Tell 'Em What Your Name Is, that's proper bo' that is!

Just don't be tempted by Kitty, Daisy and Lewis though, I love the idea behind what they're doing (Lewis collects 50's recording equipment, he's even got an acetate cutter and they record their albums in their front room, playing all the instruments themselves) but sadly the end result just isn't tight enough musically for me, my missus likes it though because of the era it evokes but I find it all a bit messy unfortunately.

That's not quite true, he IS still going, he just isn't called Terence Trent D'Arby any more. Wikipedia will tell you everything you want to know, it makes for interesting reading...

I know he is still going - I've got everything he's ever done. I meant that he never kept up the level of his first album.

What even the Sananda Maitreya stuff? Wow, apologies then, the way you talked about see the youtube clip made me think it had been a while since you'd listened to his stuff.

Fair play to you all - to me, with Stevie Wonder influence, it made a refreshing change from hearing the usual middle of the road dross that gets pumped into the charts, or the "Cowell-pop" rubbish that's thrusted down our throats.

Which would you prefer?

Nah, didn't like that - it lacked aggression, devoid of any excitement.

Yep, even under his new name from his website. Easy listening but as I said, nothing has touched his debut.
