I asked sort of the same question last week and was recommended to go with plasma.
However based on my budget and the specs I wanted, the plasma was considerably more than I bargained for.

I then went to the shop and compared 2 LCDs, a 50 hz (1920 x 1080, contrast 30,000 : 1, response time = 5 ms) and a 100 hz (1366 x768, contrast 10,000 : 1, response time = 8 ms) to see the difference between the 50 hz and 100 hz. the 100 hz was to my eyes smoother but had more ghosting (probably due to slower response time?). I then asked about plasma. the guy said that for gameplay, the color wouldn't be as vibrant as LCD + my room is a bit bright. They didn't have any plasma on display so I didn't compare. however, from my recollection of plasma screens, movies look wonderful on them.

I ended up buying the 50hz screen because I believed I could live with the less smooth motion but have the better color and resolution. After having it for ~2 days, I am quite pleased with my choice and don't really notice the "un-smoothness". Movies look superb and games are topnotch. Mine is a 42 inch and I sit about 2-3 meters away. I recommend full HD and the best specs you can get. bring your PS3 and compare 50hz vs 100hz vs Plasma and at the end let your eyes decide.

PS - My TV is hooked up to my PS3 for games and movies also.

It depends what you are sensitive to . To me and my wife the 50hz , 100hz issue was much more important than the 720 p , 1080p one and much more noticable on anything fast moving. As we do not use our set for gaming we went for plasma.

Mine is the LG 42LG53FR (i think?). I was told it's a new model that just came out less than a month. LG are dumping prices on Full HDs. Mine is a 1920 x 1080p with 30,000:1 contrast ratio and 5 ms response time but 50Hz. To my eyes the picture is great with vibrant colors. However, the only drawback are the speakers. I got it for about 561 pounds with free delivery. Not sure what the prices are in the UK but that's the price here in Bangkok. As I mentioned earlier, get the one with the best specs you can. If possible look for full HD and 100 hz with good contrast ratio/brightness/response time (if going LCD).

If you're on a budget, I believe there's a reasonably priced JVC coming out this Friday (at least here) with full HD and 100 hz but contrast ratio of only 10,000 : 1 and 10 ms response time. I just couldn't wait.

I'm actually waiting to see the Samsung series 9 and new Sony XBR and will be picking a 50+" set towards the beginning of next year so the LG is good enough for now.

Depends upon the TV, you cant say a 50Hz TV is always worse than a 100Hz.

LCDs tend to use 100Hz to improve motion, Plasmas use 100Hz to improve flicker.

What's your budget, and what size ?
