I have looked online and found the PDP-428XD for around £1,510 and the new Panasonic TH-42PZ70 for around £1,022. What I would like to know does the PDP-428XD give a £500 better picture than the TH-42PZ70? I have been looking at updating to a new Panasonic but can't see that the Pioneer is £500 better even with how it is being given the "best of the best" ratings!

these are the 2 sets left on my shortlist, and have the same question!

problem is, where on earth do you go to see them both perform side by side!?

its pretty impossible to go from one place to the next to try and compare them!!

It's the 'law of diminishing returns' coming into play, and there is no easy answer to your question. It is virtually impossible to compare the sets side by side with the same signal playing through them so you can only read as many reviews of both (and other) screens from magazines and the internet, and then go and have a look at the screens in question.

Like with HiFi the more you budget the less the perceived improvement. A £100 cd player should sound a lot better than a £50 one, but whether a £2000 player is that much better than one costing £1000 is more open to debate. Sometimes it is better to be poor than rich!!

If at the end of the day YOU cannot determine which has got the better picture and, after factoring in connections, looks(personally I prefer the 'look' of the Panny TH-42PX70 over its' sister PZ70) and maybe sound, then buy the one you want regardless of budget. If your budget was £1500 and you go with the Pioneer, then fine. If you go with the Panny then you have a 'bonus' £500 to spend or save. And if, after buying the PZ70 you cannot decide what to spend that £500 on you can send it to me!!!

Hello just came back from a shop here in Dublin where I simultaneously viewed, side by side, with the same demo DVD (may have been HD), the 428XD and the TH42PZ70. Given the recent hype surrounding the Pioneer I had expected it to outshine the Panasonic...however I wasn't convinced. Certainly blacks do look deeper on the 428XD but to my eyes the Panasonic had much better picture detail and resolution. I would also comment that on certain scenes (such as dense fabrics or a grille from a car) the Pioneer suffered from a slight fuzzy 'shimmer' , which did not appear on the Panasonic....I am going back tomorrow to view SD pictures and hopefully some sports shots....I'm beginning to suffer paralysis by analysis....

How wonderfully refreshing ( and I though I was in the sole minority) that someone else prefers the TH42PZ70 over the Pioneer 428XD. the SD on the Pansonic is excellent too

Well thats nice to hear that you seen both side by side. I am hoping (in my dreams) to find both and view them together. As for the sound of each I'm not worried as I will use my amp/speaker set up. Thanks all for clearing the pressing weight that is everywhere about the costly Pioneer.
