Just type in (ps3 blue ray settings) in the youtube search bar. It should be the first video on the list by ing.com

Very true - for example, it could well be a lot easier to pick up on the improvements of a stand-alone player over the PS3 when used on a 100" projector image. Personally, I was using a 42" HD Ready Panasonic plasma (TH-42PX600 to be exact) so the lack of 1080p might explain why I didn't see such a difference.

Good point well made, sir!

As I'm quite new to this forum, I've just noticed your tutorial on the PS3 HD upgrade and have to say thank you from my son who is now going to upgrade his PS3.

Very well done, impressive tutorial.

Hi guys... first post on these forums, but a reader of several years.

I'd strongly advise getting a PS3. It is arguably second best to the Xbox as a games console (though this is likely to change in the coming year or two), and is bettered by similarly costing players on picture and sound. However, any standalone deck will itself look pretty out-dated in a year or two, where-as the (continually upgraded) PS3 will still do its job very well then. I've had one since their release date in the UK, and absolutely love it! I have a Samsung 46A656 and the picture quality is fantastic.

If I really look for problems (and I do!) there is a LITTLE picture noise at times, and movement isn't perfect, but these problems are REALLY subtle. I intend to carry on using it for a year or two, then retire it to use as a games console only and buy a dedicated Blu-ray deck... I'm sure the class of 2010-11 will outshine the current stand-alones! May even get a Blu-ray recorder by then?

Hope this makes some kind of sense!

P.S. I have an external 400GB USB HDD plugged into my 60GB model, packed with music and films. It's very slick to use and makes a good 'media hub' for my set-up.

Fair enough, but don't forget that the PS3 isn't alone in being continually firmware upgraded. My BDP-S350 has been upgraded and will continue to do so (Whenever I can be bothered to hook it up to my router).

And as to Blue Ray settings, more and more people are finding that set to Bitstream, especially it seems on Onkyo Amps is an improvement. Owning a PS3 it is superb on this setting.

I own a PS3 ans a sony bdp550 and i dont think theres a lot in it, The standalone is quieter and can be used with my universal remote :) but picture quality is only very slightly better than the ps3 sound a bigger improvment but again thats not to say the PS3 is bad in this department!!!!!

The sound out of the PS3 is very good if you Bitstream it, as more and more people are finding out.

There is growing technical discussion on this.
It seems it is thought that with letting the PS3 decode and send the PCM signal to the AV amp (HDMI) there is a high rate of jitter which degrades the timing of the soundtrack.
But if the PS3 sends it Bitstream there is no jitter at all, and if somebody owns a high end AV that allows redigitization of the Bitstream signal with high end DACs for full manipulation the result is much improved.
The nearest thing I can equate it to is hearing the effect of fitting of a 'superclock' into a decent CD player.

Personally am not too concerned with all the complexities as I just want to listen and enjoy my system at its best, and for me there is no contest.
