Is my room big enough for floor standing speakers?

Hello everyone, I am not at all experienced regarding hifi and I am wanting to buy my first system. I would really appreciate your advice regarding floorstanding speakers. My room is 11' x 12' - do you think my room is big enough for some entry level floorstanding speakers? My speaker budget is around the 500-600 pound mark. If you think it would be fine, do you have a speaker that you would recommend? (I was also thinking of buying the Marantz PM6007 amplifier because I read it was quite good). The room will be a dedicated music room and I'm happy to do whatever it takes to make it accoustically friendly with diffuser panels etc.

Why do you think you need floor standing speakers as opposed to standmounts in your room.....you'll need to have them well out from the wall if you want to avoid that bass boom we try to avoid if we can...me.....I'd be looking for a quality standmount and maybe a small subwoofer....Floorstanders in the budget you're looking at are in my opinion.....a big compromise.....yes the floorstanders give you more low end, which impresses newbies....but...a 600 quid pair of standmounts will give you so much more detail and....well fun.....I've been there, done it...wore that t-shirt...just remember you need to put the standmount speakers on.......yes....stands.

if you like bass get floor standers and add in the cost of the stands the Wharfedale 12.3 well worth a listen i have the older Marantz Amp they are brilliant. but only your ears can decide.

Why do you want a new system do you have a system now ?

good luck .👍

Yeah I think personally floorstanding speakers would probably be to big.

However! you can get compact floor-standing speakers which are basically stand mounts with wooden stands attached. Examples of these back in the day would have been mission m73/ kef iq5’s tiny speakers with just a little more bass bass output than there standmount brothers and sisters but not massively so.

A modern speaker off the top of my head would be the neat alpha. These can be found used/preowned for around the 600 mark. They seem to get good reviews and can be placed pretty close to walls. I have no idea what they sound like

Get yourself off to a dealer and have a listen to a selection, if you don't, the chances of getting something that suits you is pretty small. (Reviews and personal recommendations are great for making a shortlist, but are a terrible idea to make the final choice)

I love a pair of Neat Iota Alphas around the 600 mark! I owned the original Neat Iotas and would highly recommend. A man of few regrets, I regret selling them.

Thanks for the advice - it's very helpful. I just like the look of floor standing speakers, but the sound is more important. I popped into the HiFi shop and lsitened to some Bowers and Wilkins 607 S3 and the seemed very good.

Thanks Bill. I went into the HifI shop today and listened to B&W 607 S3s and Wharfdale 12.1 book shelf speakers and they seemed ok, but I do like the look of floorstanding speakers more. The chap in the shop really didn't have an opinion about the floor standing speakers, but he played the Wharfdale 12.3 and they seemed fine - the sound room was only tiny 9' x 9'.

Thanks for replying, Shrek. No, I've never had a hifi system before and I couldn't afford one when I was working. But I just retired at 73 and can now access my pension funds. So, a modest hifi is in order! As it happens, I just tried out the wharfdales and I loved them!

Thanks for the advice. But I really don't want to buy pre-owned as I don't have enough experience to know what I'm doing! I like the safety of a warranty. I looked at the Neat Lota speakers and they look so lovely, but a they are a bit more than I can afford.

Your welcome John.
The speakers have the most impact . I would spend more on the speakers than the Amp my opinion.
The Marantz are very well built the 12.3 I love them in my small study dont have to be loud, they have lots of character once you let the Amp warm up .and sound good with all types of music from old to new recordings and have a good phono stage if you want add in the future.
ive always preferd the sound from a floor stander let your ears do the work .

Within you budget I would go for a pair of bookshelf speakers. E.g. Dali Oberon 3 or B&W 606/607. Floorstanders at that price point are not very good.

I agree about Dalis. I auditioned a pair some time ago, and they were near-perfect to my ears: Clean, very detailed, balanced... I almost bought them (US$900), but went for floor-standing Vandersteen 1C's. I have to think they'd sound better in a larger room, but I do have them as far from the walls as I can, and their sound is near-perfect also: Delicate but detailed highs, very transparent, bass could probably be better, but is good enough for my money. They and the Dalis were similar in transparency (much like my Snell Acoustics a few decades ago).

Don't know how much any of this will help. Just throwing my 2 cents in.
