Only had my RP3 2 months but it is on everday sometimes for 7-8 hours

Is it possible my stylus could be worn already?

Playing Adele - 19 - seems distorted, though it was the pressing but tried some others and my records are not sounding as they should?

cheers

hi Steve

I think it might be, my Goldring 1012gx plays about the same hours day 4/5 weekdays and 6/7 hours at weekends and shows no sign os worn.

But some thing must be causing that premature worn, i think it might be bad alignment.

I've asked my Rega dealer about life expectancy of a stylus and he said that can be 7 to 10 years, with a good alignment.

Well I have spoken to Analogue Seduction today and they say there is no way the stylus should be worn!

I am experiencing a lot of siblance!

They are pretty sure the stylus is dirty - I played some new records last night and they said maybe the remenants of the pressing are still present on the vinyl surface and this comes off on first play and sticks to the stylus!

I am taking my Turntable back to them on Saturday so they can listen to it give the stylus a look over & clean.

Tonight will just be CDs.

Will keep you updated!

Regarding inner groove distortion - this isnt it I have a gut feeling its a dirty stylus as I have had some mistracking too.

Just out of interest what value have you set the bias/anti-skate to?

If it is set to match the tracking weight (1.75 or whatever) then reduce the bias to 1 or even 0.5 and try again.

[EDIT] Actually, so long as the deck is on a plumb level surface, start at 0.5.

I balance the arm

Then set Tracking Weight to 1.75 then slide Bias to 1.75 as per Rega instructions

So I slide the Bias in to 0.5 to start with!

I have used a new childs soft bristle tootbrush and gently stroked the stylus back to front.

Gonna play some records now!

Start with the troublesome tracks first.

My experience of reducing bias on RB300 and RB250 arms was always positive. Less sibilance and no mistracking.

Following Rega instructions and setting the bias value to match the VTF always resulted in mis-tracking and 'last track nasties'. And that was with every Rega deck and arm I ever owned* (from 1983 until a few years ago) regardless of whatever cartridge I had in use at the time.

*Four Rega TTs and 5 Rega arms (I once had a Walker CJ55 with an RB300 fitted.)

Thanks Chebby for the advice!

Well as a temporary measure I used a soft bristle childs toothbrush and it seems to have improved things no end!

Set the Bias slider to about 1.0

Ordered a proper Carbon Stylus Brush & Nagaoka Stylus Cleaner - happy days now!

Re: IGD - I only ever experienced this on one occasion and I actually think the Elys 2 is a wonderful cartridge for the money.

well well well!

It seems that there is absolutely nothing wrong with my Elys 2 cart - after a bit of googling it seems apparent that Adele -19 must be one of the poorest recordings on vinyl to ever exist - almost all track show excessive siblance - I never thought a record could sound soo bad!

How on earth can they get away with charging £15 for this rubbish? I was just glad to put the CD on which is far better sounding than the Vinyl

I contacted the ebay seller (it was sealed & new) he just said send it back for a refund and the rest of his stock will more than likely be the same!

Any way I have learnt a lesson!

After Adele 21 I don't but any more Adele Vinyl albums, at least without reading a review...

shocked by how bad 19 sounds - been panicking for days that my stylus was shot!

Even 21 sounds ok in comparison!

Adele's 21 seems to be the only CD that my wife ever plays in the car. If I hear it again, irrespective of format, I won't be responsible for my actions.

In all honesty I bought it as the gf likes it, im not averse to her and I actually thought 19 would sound pretty nice on vinyl......how wrong was I?

How they can get away will producing such crap is beyond me!

My vinyl copy of 19 has been returned for a refund - now what can I spend the refund on?

BTW Depeche Mode - Delta Machine on vinyl sounds fantastic

I know there is a lot of variability in mastering/production quality - but why should we have to read a review or research to see how good it sounds irrespsective of the music you want to buy.

In all honesty I think I'm over the worst now. Unfortunately I think that Adele is now being replaced by Emile Sande or someone.

Agreed!

Whatever anyone says, CD or Vinyl those 2 albums along Florence & the Machine are the pinnacle of the loudness wars......what a disgrace!

Different kettle of fish with the likes of Ms Bush - 50 Words for Snow on vinyl is simply stunning!
