is it time for a new receiver?

I have a sony str 1200 av receiver. Which powers my sony 360 blu ray, wharfedale diamond 9 package , lg lcd fhd. Point is my amp constantly cuts off and goes to 'protect', what does this mean? Is it time to upgrade or is this a technical issue?

The first thing to check is your cabling. Make sure that there are no stray speaker wires that could be causing a short. If it continues, I would disconnect everything then connect each source in turn and each speaker in turn and see if the fault appears when you connect a particular device or speaker. If it turns out to be a fault, it is repairable, you don't have to upgrade!!
