As far as I can tell HDMI has always been a 21 pin connection anduntill now some of these pins were unused. The information sent down the bale is digital so impedancewould not be an issue - so are HDMI 1.4 cables just a way for cable maufaturers to take more money from us ?? TH reason I ask is I have a 4 year old cable buried in my wall to my new Philips 46PFL9705....Please dont tell me I would need to replace this cable for use with a 3D blu ray player ???

Good stuff - Thank you! So its a case of try it and see? I do get 1080P through the cable and to my TV so its just the 3D it need to cope with now! Otherwise I will need to dig up my walls and put a new cable in there

yes.

That said, there are differences between standard or high speed cable. The standard cables are not certified for 1080p (hdmi 1.0 ), ethernet channel (1.4) or 3D (1.4). Note that "not certified" does not mean "won't work".
