Ipod problem

I have just plugged in my ipod to update it and nothing happened! Itunes doesn't recognise it but it does come up charging and then the charged symbol a few seconds later as i fully charged it the day before which i guess rules out any problems with the cable etc so far i tried restarting the computer and itunes nothing, restarting the ipod holding down menu and the centre button and also trying it in windows ( it is a mac formatted ipod) still nothing any suggestions? I only bought it last august so under warranty but wanted to see if anyone had any ideas first. Thanks

Sorry also tried restoring settings through the menus. It also does play ok as i tried that to test it.

Could be the cable - even though it's charging it might have a problem with the data links. I've had a mobile phone connector do the same thing (no link but charging ok) - one of the pins that carried data had broken.
