Hi,

Just finished building my new speakers if anyone is interested. The are from a company called IPL Acoustics. I have taken a few photos of the build and I will try to post them on here! This is my first attempt at this so bear with me.

Cheers

Hi Bubster

Looking forward to seeing your pictures as I think DIY speakers are the way to go. You might get a better response if you post them in the "Your System" section of the Forum.

Cheers

Hi

The kit consisted of the following

2 x bass drivers 10"

2 x mid drivers 5"

2 x ribbon tweeters

Crossover components

Fixing screws / bolts

Profiles acoustic foam

Long haired wool for internal damping

Internal wire for connections

I made the cabinets from the plans provided with the kit. They are made from 24mm birch faced ply with 18mm mdf internal baffles finished externally with 20% AC lacquer. The front panel is 24mm birch ply laminated with FA Black laminate.

Will try to post finished pics and a comparison later

Cheers chris

The finished speakers sound excellent. Previously I had been using monitor audio s8’s and there is just no comparison. Unbelievable as the kit cost half the price of the MA’s.

It appears that you have not taken the most flattering view ! They look really well made tho' and a credit to yr carpentry skills. I am so tempted having made a few boxes some years back. It would be great if a proper review were made available since it is impossible to hear them beforehand but it appears you are really pleased as you should be ! great job.

Cheers

Stunning build - they really do make my IPL's seem inadequate in the size department seeing as my drivers are those little 5" jobbies you have under your gargantuan bass drivers!

I am listening to mine now and can fault them!

I keep promising to put up a build thread of mine - might get round to it one day :(

Have you built or heard the s5 like the one this man has built.
I like that its 3 way and has a large 10 in bass driver.
is the tweeter as good as the ma one?

Morning, no I have not built or heard the S5 there not much call for them due to the size! As the the tweeter my guess would be to place it as close to the normal ear leval as possible, I will speak with Ivan an get a definative answer. As to the tweeter being as good as the MA PL600 one the Fountek CD3 is the same device as used in many of IPL designs, having said that the consruction of the PL300 is pretty special. Due to the nature of Ribbon Tweeters they differ in measurementsone to the other, IPL tests each one and builds individual crossover values for each one. One reason mass manufactures dont use them apart from top end speakers. What I do know IPL produce amazingly wonderful musical speakers and I have replaced some customers mid to high end speakers with them and not for financial reasons.

OK so I mailed Ivan at IPL, forgot he was on holiday, here is his reply!

Hi Colin,

The S5tl is designed to be used in larger rooms with the listener at least 11ft from the speaker this ensures good integration, when the speaker is tipped back slightly, by making the front spikes longer than the rear, the sound is well integrated and the response measurements taken at ear level are flat , The listener is not then aware of the configuration or where the tweeter is placed from a sonic point of view.

Kind regards Ivan
