Iphone built in audio stereo?

Just noticed when i play audio via iphone 4s' built in speakers the sound only comes from one of them. There are two meshed openings. Are these stereo speakers and is it supposed to play stereo?

Just checked this on my girlfriends 4S, and its the same. The music only comes from the right hand side meshgrill opening.

Maybe the other opening is for an extra microphone that monitors background noise when calling? (my Sony Xperia Neo uses one too, to reduce noise)
