I rarely use it but my credit keeps going down. I says when I turn it on you will pay £1 for data today! Why? I have just turned it on nothing else!

I am on PAYG and my credit keeps going down but I rarely use it. No Internet - nothing.

Clearly you have your mobile data connection switched on, switch it off.

If you rarely use the internet why TF do you have an iPhone? What's the point?

Is Cellular Data / 3G enabled (under Settings > General > Cellular)? If so, switch this off, otherwise I suspect with your contract, this is charging you per day since it will use this for all sorts of things under the hood without you knowing.

Of course if you want to use Mobile Internet, then you're better off getting yourself on to a better contract where you have some free data allowance each month as this will work out cheaper.

Cheers guys!

Did you ever stop to ask yourself whether you actually needed one? Of course not, what was I thinking?

So you bought an iPhone to use solely as a phone, which is, arguably, their weakest point?

I used it more in the past but just don't need to at the moment. I like it as a music player when I want to use it and I like the way it works (most of the time!).

One of my daughters is using my old iPhone 4 and has a monthly renewable deal costing £13 per month with unlimited data and plenty of call time / texts etc.

I don't understand why you stick to a PAYG that charges £1 every time you turn it on. Shop around.

It won't charge me any more though will it?

I honestly don't know.

I've almost forgotten what PAYG is. I still have £11.67 left on a Sony Ericsson K750i that I keep as an emergency backup, but I haven't topped it up for ages. Just charge it now-and-then and phone the landline (free) to check it still works.

About twice a year I respond to a message from the provider in order to prevent the account from being stopped due to 'inactivity'. Obviously, being half 'archeological artifact' and half phone, I don't use the internet on it 🙂

I can highly recommend giffgaff. For £10 per month you get 500 mins talk, unlimited texts and 1gb data. Takes care of all of my needs and i use data most days though not to download music or vids. I think you can get unlimited data for £2 extra. You can even use your mobile data allowance for tethering on the £10 deal though not the £12. Very reliable service so far using O2 network.

+1. I'm planning on switching to it next month. Wife already on it since a year.

LHC -Isn't it about time you stop criticising everything you want to and let people get on with their life. Constructive advice -yes,derogatory comments no.

No it won't charge you with the mobile data turned off, just turn it on when needed. Your service provider will then charge you £1 for a days usage ( usually 1gb but varies) you can still use the wifi to collect your emails etc without charge obviously. I use an iPhone on a PAYG tariff with no problems and generally only need to use 3G when on holiday, coverage is shite anyway.

I'm sorry you feel offended on gel's behalf, however I'm sure if gel had a problem he'd make it known.

If I've ever (obliquely) asked gel to do anything, it's to learn to make his own decisions in life, instead of running every trivial question past this place instead (i mean he even came to us for medical advice over a potentially serious problem and then cancelled his hospital appointment because of the "advice" he got here, that's not just ridiculous, it's potentially dangerous). You certainly can't blame me for all this place's ills, I almost never get involved in the AVI slanging matches which most seem to think are the biggest issue here for example.

I've never understood why you, more than anybody else, has such an issue with me, I can't remember ever even talking to you in the past, so it can't be something I've said to you. I've never much cared about the reason in the past but I admit there's an idle curiosity to know, so come on then, out with it.

I know not to take things seriously on a forum (most of the time).

I didn't cancel a doctors appointment on here because of advice on here. Where did you get that idea? I seem to recall we had a conversation on it, but that is not what I meant!

No one gave me advice on here.

I have re- booked it anyway, due to not feeling well again. Better to be safe.

[EDITED by MODS - please everyone, no more personal or potentially libellous comments on this thread]

Well, that at the end of quite a long thread on the subject you announced you'd cancelled the appointment. I seem to have put 2 and 2 together and come up with 5 though, sorry about that.

I seem to recall we had a conversation on it, but that is not what I meant!

Well, I'm not sure I quite agree with that, there were a lot of people telling you what it might or might not be and things you might do about it. I don't know what that is if it's not advice?

Glad to hear it. Just to clear things up Gel, if I have upset you in anyway either in this thread or previously I apologise for that. I am aware I'm quite hard on you at times, I'll refrain from doing that in the future.

You have not upset me at all. I am a bit puzzled and amused by the thread but that is about it!

just to get back on topic (how dare I lol), if I were you Gel I'd still keep an eye on that credit. You may still find your provider has sneaky ways to charge you behind the scenes, or you may have inadvertently subscribed to an app or a service which takes a regular payment by debiting your credit.
