in terms of picture quality, am I better spending my £800 to £ 950 on a led (lcd) tv or dlp / lcd projector.

I know 3d especially on a big screen is the way torward but I went into currys the other day to look at tvs and the guy told 3d is better on a tv due to contrast and colour. If this is true I dont mind sacrificing a 110'' screen for a 55'' tv as my number goal is picture quality.

My question is that on the subject of black level, sharpness, vivid colour etc is my stated budget (above) beter spent on a tv or projector.

Room is 350 cm by 280cm, the room is painted magnolia with white ceiling, a window and whit furnishings. I cant paint room black but my idea was to get blackout blinds for the window and cover the whole wall behind the screen with a black curtain.

One TV that sticks out for me is the Panasonic 55ST60 plasma then. The black levels will be far superior to that of an LCD and will give you more of a projector like experience. I am not sure there are that many TVs you can buy with a budget like that though, especially for an LCD.

3D seems to be shrinking at the moment. At your price level a tv screen will out-perform a projector, particularly if you can still get the cheap plasmas that were available just recently.

Well, I certainly would not agree that 3D, whether on a television or projector, is necessarily the way forward.

Hmmm, your room really isn't the biggest. I don't understand how you were contemplating a 110" projector screen in a relatively small room ....

I agree with gel that the Panasonic 55ST65 is your best option. There are many glowing reviews on the internet, such as this one

http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-tv-panasonic-st60/

But you are simply going to have to spend more money to get the 55ST65. Oh, I'm sure that in a supermarket chain you could buy within your budget a 55" television of a make of which few people have heard, but will it be any good? You can get the Panasonic from TPS just outside Manchester for an in-store price of £1,299 here http://www.tps.uk.com/tps/home.html?product_id=1542&product_group_id=222&choice_id=149&tab_id=52&page_name=product

By the way, don't be tempted to save money by buying one of last year's ST50 series televisions - Richer Sounds, for instance, are still doing the 50" version of the ST50 for £700. The ST50 series from last year was very good, and I wanted one myself, but this year's ST60 series is even better in at least three ways that I can think of - even deeper black levels, more extensive picture calibration options, an improved Electronic Programme Guide, with a small window showing the present channel, when you are using the machine as a television, rather than as a Blu-Ray display.

If you don't have quite enough money just now it's better to save for a month or two and get a good television, rather than buy an inferior machine just now.

@ son_of_sj. I know my room is small but with short throw projector like the benq w1070 or acer h6510bd I can project onto a 110'' dig screen from about 3m. My main issue is whether a projector or tv will give the best picture quality with in my budget. I am also curious on how a projector will perform (in terms of picture quality) in a room that is painted magnolia , white ceiling, white furnishing, and a window.

I ask this out of interest. :)

Is it possible to effectively see everything that's going on with a 110 inch picture at the distance you will sit in your sized room? If it is possible, is it desirable in terms of eye strain and fatigue?
