AFAICR the Panasonic main unit takes its power from the subwoofer it comes with, so you have to have that connected to the mains power and the main unit, and I don't think there's anything more than a stereo analogue output from the main unit, so you're not going to get surround sound, even with an AV receiver.

You'd do better to buy a budget receiver such as the Onkyo TX-SR505 or the new 506, and a similarly inexpensive DVD player such as the Samsung DVD-HD870, at about £250 and £50 respectively. The receiver will then take a digital feed from the DVD player and give proper surround, and stereo analogue from the Sky box and process it into pseudosurround using Pro-Logic processing (as well as decoding those programs shown with a Dolby Surround encoded soundtrack).

Video hook-ups? Connect the Sky box to the TV using the Scart, and add an HDMI board to the Panansonic screen - about £130 from places such as this - to allow the new DVD player to be connected to the display. Alternatively you could use a Scart switcher between the Sky/DVD and screen, but this will give lower-quality pictures from DVD.

Assuming the equipment already mentioned, analogue audio from Sky box to receiver, and digital - electrical for preference, optical if that's the only option - from DVD player to receiver.

And no, that sub won't work with the receiver - it's only designed to work as part of the Panasonic system.

Get an upscaling DVD player. Make sure it supports HDMI 1.3, can upscale to 1080P. Sound wise make sure it has either a digital co-axial or optical sound output/

No, if you only have Scart and the switcher, just about any DVD player will do. And you need a DVD player with a digital audio output, either optical or electrical, to connect to the receiver.

Yes phono cable for the Sky box - you will get stereo, though any programmes made with Dolby Surround (of the old analogue kind) encoded will allow the receiver's Pro-Logic decoder to work on them and give surround effects.
