We had at least 3 ipod classics that bricked themselves within a couple of years. I still have an ipod nano (local storage only) but it doesn't see much use. The bottleneck for me is iTunes. Apple insists on pushing their ALAC format by not supporting FLAC. That means i first have to convert whatever i want to listen to.
Are you asking mainly because you have music in iTunes that was purchased, tied to your Apple ID? Are you using iTunes for file sync, library management, streaming to your network, etc.?
Do you have other Apple hardware and have you bought into their ecosystem? If so, you probably have an iphone or ipad to control the music you listen to. An older model iphone without sim card could work if you want a separate device and can't find an ipod touch anymore.
However, if you want to move away from Apple hardware, and can manage your files outside of iTunes, then there are plenty of digital players that will work with your files, and support a range of streaming services over wifi. I've been using a Fiio for over 7 years now, playing FLAC from a microSD.
If you're not considering alternatives, sorry for responding beside the question 😉
