My phone is up for an upgrade next week and orange have offered me a nice new 16g i-phone 3gs, im very tempted to go for it, the only problem is i could also get a nokia 5800 with free music for two years! Ive checked out the nokia store and everything ive searched is on there, free music! surely i should go for the nokia? I love the apple device and i know i would spend cash on music from i-tunes so it could be the wrong choice, i upgrade headphones to either shure se115 or beyerdynamic dtx80, advice needed!

I would say that undoubtedly the iPhone is the better phone. However, how much does that free music appeal to you?? (It seems like it does quite a bit.)

Are there any limitations to the free music??

It's a no brainer, the Apple iphone win's hands down! I have one myself and must admit it's one of those innovation products that is perfect in every way, the features, the quality, the interface etc it works like a dream and you will hear the same from many iphone owners too. The free music on the Nokia for 2 years is a great offer but i have to base it on the phone itself and the Apple easily walks over the Nokia 5800. Once you have a iphone, it is hard to let it go and change for something else, i have owned all three versions of the iphone since it's 1st release and am looking forward to the next one in June.

As for headphones, i would opt for the Shure SE115, for the mere difference in price between the 2 models, the Shure is the better performer of the two and they are stylish too.

I agree. I don't like iTunes and Apple stuff normally but the iPhone is one of the best things Ive ever bought.

The music is locked to the phone and cant be saved to your pc, apart from that it seem's to be great, you can download as much music as the sd micro card can hold useing wi-fi or hooked up to your pc. The i-phone is a great bit of kit, the only problem is i will have to fill it with great music and that will cost me, the idea of downloading any album for free whenever i feel like it is fantastic, ive checked out review's on youtube for the nokia 5800 (comes with music edition) they all seem impressed and there are no hidden catches, it's a tough decision as the i-phone is a class act.

The Nokia 5800 is probably one of Nokia's better phone's that they have introduced for a while but just be aware that Nokia's usually have allot of bugs since they started upping their game in recent years on the phone market. I used to own a Nokia "N" series phone, 2 of them to be precise and with both i always had problems, so did my friend who owned a different Nokia N series, so my faith with Nokia fell quite a bit.

Apple are more frequent with their updates and in fairness the phone works like a dream, its a polished piece of kit. Apple do also have allot of after market support for their products from many manufacturers and there are so many add on's you can buy for the phone its crazy, such as an ipod dock, there's loads of them, thats one example from many.

If i was you, i'd head down to a Apple shop if there is one near you and have a play with the iphone, also see if you can play with the Nokia 5800 at a Carphone Warehouse store or somewhere similar and see what you think of that too.

Everyone here on the What Hi-Fi forums are going to tell you to grab the iphone, it won the readers product of the year.

Tomorrow is almost here and i will picking up my new i-phone 16g 3gs,i have uploaded load's of tunes on to i-tune's ready for my phone, i have bought a pair of senheiser cx250 headphones to use until i go for a pair over the hundred pound mark, any headphone suggestions welcome!

When ripping cd's do they automaticly burn to the highest bit rate? i dont want any compressed mp3 nonsense! And finally... when i buy music from i-tune's is the music the highest bit rate? Thank's for all the advice!

jimm:When ripping cd's do they automaticly burn to the highest bit rate? i dont want any compressed mp3 nonsense! No, i think it defaults to AAC 256kbps- to change it to lossless, in itunes go, edit>preferences>general>import settings then change the encoder from AAC to Apple lossless and tick the "use error correction" box......

And finally... when i buy music from i-tune's is the music the highest bit rate? Thank's for all the advice! No, musc is encoded using AAC 256kbps from the itunes store.

Thank's for the info, all i need now is a decent pair of earphones to get the best out of the i-phone, my budget is around 200 pound's, was thinking a pair of shure's, they seem to be highly regarded. Im using a pair of senheiser cx250's at the moment, they sound ok, bass is good but vocals sound dry and not very sweet.

I'd get these or these. A quick Google shows both can be had for under £200.
