Mentasm:boopolo:So when the disc menu is set at True HD and PS3 is set to output PCM, the PCM output bandwidth varies from 2Mbps to over 5Mbps.

But when disc menu is set to uncompressd PCM its at a constant 4.6Mbps datastream. How come?(just curious)

TrueHD is VBR, variable bitrate, so it will change according to the sound being played. You'll notice that it drops durring quiet periods, or periods of no noise. This is because there's little to no info to be encoded, so space is saved allowing the track to be much smaller overall. It'll spike during louder moments, like explosions etc.

PCM uses CBR, constant bitrate, which uses the same bitrate for silence as it does for the loudest moments. Obviously that takes up a lot more room. The easiest way to think of it is like an archiving program for PC data. TrueHD/DTS-HD MA are like .zip for audio.

Just separate the PCM audio format from the player outputting PCM and you're halfway there.

Thank you my friend. I understand fully now. I will stick with "PCM"ing the True HD signal with it variable bitrate from the PS3 to the receiver.

Glad to be of help Boo.

I own one of the earlier PS3's and find it coupled up with my Onkyo 875 that Blue Ray films sound amazing put through 'bitstream', and sound thin and brittle down LPCM.

That had me scratching my head!

Obviously my 875 does a better job of processing everything than the PS3 without any loss of detail to my ears.

Another variable to add to the above is that when I bought the 875 and MA RS8 AV system, (03/08) I initially plugged it all together into the house ring main with the supplied mains cables. There was big differences between the 875 audio formats with many of them sounding 'closed in'.

I set about doing various upgrades starting with replacing the fuse box with a consumer unit with better Earth grounding and a dedicated line for my AV, PS3, TV, etc. Tacima, Russ Andrews powerlines.
This bought clarity to all the various sound modes, they all sounded as revealing as being played on 'direct' mode.
The last thing done was to replace all the speaker cap crossovers with SA Clarity Caps, bypassed with Vishay MKP 1837 poly's.

So now my system is far from standard so what sounds really good on my settings will not sound as open and revealing otherwise.

But nowadays I am listening to music etc and not the system, enjoying it immensely !

Gerrardasnails:All of the discs I've played have defaulted to the HD audio codec on the disc. It might be that the player recognises that my equipment is set up to work with any codec and that's why it does it.

It's disc dependant. For example, a lot of Warner titles default to the standard Dolby Digital 5.1 track.

Mine too. Regardless of what the 875 has been set to previously.
