How to add active sub with line-in to receiver without sub-out?

Here's the thing! I have a Yamaha receiver with no sub-out, all there are A, B and A+B speaker out and pre-out. Sad thing is that the sub has only line-in (has to come from receiver sub-out which I don't have). So, can anyone help me with how to connect these two things?

Thanks

Connect the pre-out to the line in on the sub using a pair of phono cables

It's a Yamaha RX-397. As I understand the receiver pre-out "contains" all the spectrum but subwoofer line-in "accepts" only lower end of the spectrum, isn't it so?

Well, the RX-397 doesn't have pre-outs, so you really need a subwoofer able to accept a speaker-level input. It's the only way to go.

Ok, that's sad! But then again while using the speaker-level input, if the speakers used are 86dB/8ohms and receiver is set to 8ohms then how do I choose the sub? Does the sub need to be close to 86dB and 8ohms as well?

Does that mean that with an Arcam Solo Mini I can use the Pre-Out's to connect to the inputs of a powered sub? And presumably any sub - it doesn't have to be the Arcam sub, does it?

(Sorry to pinch someone's thread!)

In your original post you said 'Sad thing is that the sub has only line-in',
In your last post you indicate that it might also have speaker level in/out too when you say 'But then again while using the speaker-level input'.

If your sub has speaker level connections, that looks like the way to proceed.

If you don't have speaker level connections, it's just occured to me that you might be able to use your headphone output to feed the subs, but I'm not at all sure about what impedance and other problems you might encounter doing this. Don't rush out and buy a cable yet until other people have had a chance to warm you off this route.

yes just use the pre outs and you can buy any sub that has low level inputs - i have just added one of the discounted epos m subs to my system and its fantastic - i've never been happier
