How much should I be spending on interconnects and speaker cable?

Hi all!
I have a DAC XP and X Power and am using (currently) Chord cobra 3 interconnect (from my old system) and QED silver anniversary xt speaker cable. The long term plan will be getting some decent floorstanders about the £2k mark (Very long term plan). So how much should I be spending on the Interconnects and speaker cable to get the best out of the XP and Xpower, and does anyone have any suggestions as to what to go for?

And yes before anyone says anything the chord and QED combo does sound bright (and possibly a bit lean). In fact I'm glad it does because I've always not really believed that interconnects make that much difference so I thought I'd swap my old Cambridge atlantics for the qed "just to see" and I could hear a difference (more detailed, less bass, leaner sounding)!

I guess considering your gear, the best thing to do would be the usual demoing of various cables and judge for yourself which you prefer and whether you can justify the expense.I would expect that at a certain level the increase in performance will not justify the increase in cost.

Personally I use Merlin cables with my Cyrus gear and I think it sounds great.
