How important is the quality of the suround speakers?

Would have to suggest that bass reflection is generally a 'bad' thing. Interference/bass cancelling/bass traps etc. Clearly 'some' reflection is inevitable and maybe neccessary but I think the concept of reflection being a good thing rather confuses the importance of room treatment to improve low frequency response.

How can said bad reflection be recognized tho,what am i listening for?;my sub is not at all boomy,and for the most part sounds pretty tight :?

The room size wasn't much bigger than mine. He explained that the demo room isn't ideal acoustically because of soft and hollow walls and floors. He is having to use 2 subs when 1 would have been sufficient for a room of this size. The walls were soaking up all the bass effects.

At the same time, hollow and soft walls which totally soak up all bass may not be ideal as well.

In terms of subs, have a look at the BK range. For the price of a used PV1 you cold get a new top of the range BK, which is quite a monster. And they know a thing or two about subs, being the guys who used to make the RELs. Only issue is they are mail order only so demoing isn't possible.

I am somewhat puzzled about yr explaination BB (& David). My research/knowledge/experience would find it hard to believe that any wall would 'absorb' bass frequencies significantly. Bass traps achieve this using at least 8inches of rockwool or similar. Whilst respecting yr (plural) opinions I would suggest a second sub well swtup would aim to fill in each others nulls rather than to reinforce due to absorbsion. I recognised my bass issues by finding nulls and boomy areas within the listening area. One null was in one of two seats and a huge boom/reinforcement at the far end of the room. Using bass traps and repositioning the sub I lost the boom and the two seats had equally good bass. I found the research on bass traps etx very useful and involves only baaic physics

PS 2x BK subs?? Is the old building insured for subsidence? 🙂
