i've got approx £1000 to spend on amp and speakers but not sure how to split it. do i: A.spend aprox half on each. B.more on amp than speakers or C.more on speakers than amp. want full hd and 5.1 surround. bluray player to come later

Well, you can get a really good AV receiver such as the Onkyo TX-SR606 or Yamaha DSP-AX763 for £400, leaving you £600 for the speakers. That would buy you the Q Acoustics 1010i 5.1 set-up for £500, leaving you £100 for cables. Or there's the new KEF KHT2005.3 package at a touch over budget at £700.
And as for the point made by the second poster, having just watched the Ten O'Clock news, yes a stiff drink is definitely in order!

I got this email earlier this year when Norther Rock was going bust and commodity prices were almost at it's pick, so although I didn't do the calculation myself, it might have been true? A lot has change since then though.. Aluminium price is down ~30% since then so maybe it's time to rethink this "investment strategy"

I would agree with Andy's advice, but you can get the Q Acoustic speakers for £450, so the denon 1909 (£450) might be a good option too. Be warned: The Yamaha amp only has 2 HDMI inputs so be aware not to run out if you choose that amp.(Onkyo has 4, and denon has 3)
The denon might be the best compromise ,though, especially if your using it for music too, and need a 1080p upscaler.
That would leave you with the £100 Andy mentioned for cables etc.

Apart from 2 hdmi inputs is there much difference between Yahama and Denon? Sound quality? Picture? I think they both upscale analog inputs to 1080p..
Just asking because Denon 1909 is lacking preouts and I'm looking for alternatives..
