homeplugs speed and surge protected mains adapter/plug boards

Hi

I recently connected my bedrooms (2) to my network using tplink 1gig/500Mbps powerline plugs. I have Marantz cr603 units connected ti them via a tplink switch. Works well allowing me to stream fkacs from the router's media server. However, I have had to remove all the surge protected plugs and boards from the circuit as it would seem that they more than half the speed of the link. I'm worried now that my equipment is vulnerable. Especially as we just had a lightening storm that took out our bt verve dect phone base station. Can anyone advise a way around this? To be protected without sacrificing speed.

Which TP link plugs have you got? I've got these:

Although they're advertised as "500Mbps", the Ethernet ports are 10/100 & not Gigabit, so you'll never get more than 100Mbps.

Some homeplugs have AC pass through, to which you can connect the surge protector:

Hello.

Yeah mine is the 551 kit and and a 551 single...as in your second link. I use the passthrough but it makes no odds. Stick a surge protected plug or board anywhere on the same circuit and it chops the speed in half. The utility that comes with the units (on cd and at tp link's site) measures speed by communicating with the units. Without a single protected plug or board the speed averages between 216Mbps and 258 mbps. With just one surge strip on the same circuit it drops to 85mbps and 112 Mbps.
