Hi im planning on making some speaker stands for my MS aviano 1's.

The idea is to get 2 sections of oak with a steel plate fixed to the bottom, with spikes in each corner.

but i wondered if the mass of the oak would affect the sound? most stands for sale seem to have narrow legs, is this for a reason?

You are talking my kind of language, I made some speaker stands out of engineering bricks about 20 years ago, the principal is the weight/mass, they weigh around 20kg each so when the speaker moves some air it really is the air that moves and not the speaker.

I put them away in the garage about 8 years ago because the wife doesn't like the look of them and got them out more recently, they really add to the control.

Have a look at these eBay listings (nothing to do with me) though interesting oak stands:

I have also thought of making stands out of these:

Whatever design you decide upon, it is best to be rigid, fairly heavy, sonically 'dead' and able to firmly hold your speakers.

When putting footspikes on, if you decide to use them, three are easier to level than four.

dave_k:Find some old railway sleepers - the wood in them is excellent...

Yes , if you don't mind the smell of creosote permeating throughout your house . However, on the plus side they won't rot away underneath your speakers .

Thanks for the replies guys.

The second ebay link will be most like what im going to achieve, but with painted steel as the base plate and top plate, just need to source some large oak sections locally.
