I have been checking what is the best layout for my speaker (5.1) setup but there seems to be lots of different opinions. Its mainly the front speakers and the sub i want to check. Some say you should angle the front speaker and have the sub between the speaker and the Tv.

Any help would be appreciated.

There's lots of variants that affect this, the room harmonics the speakers and your preferences.

The reason it is suggested the sub be placed between these speakers is to integrate it into the sound stage better, sometimes it is just not possible.

For example, my front L & R are spaced even a long the wall either side of the TV and because of their nature (wall mounted) can't be toed in. The sub sits to the left of the left speaker, to be hidden (wife factor)but the stage is excellent.

Toeing in usually works best with stand mount or normal floor mounted speakers, especially when used in stereo playback.

I suggest you have a mess around and see what sounds best to you.

It depends a lot on your speaker, and your room acoustics as mentioned above.

The sub is by far the hardest to place, as the accuracy, definition and level of the bass frequencies are most affected by the room. The 'right' place for the sub is literlally the position in which is sounds best in the main listening position.

The front speakers should generally be angled in toward the listening position, but to what degree will depend on the dispersion characteristics of the speakers.

Surrounds should be above head height (2-3ft), and there exact position will depend on their configuration - direct radiators, dipoles etc.

Good resources and guides can be found in a few places, but I would trust the experts at Dolby, or DTS (just google to find their websites) - together with any guidlines your speaker manufacturer gives you.

Thanks for the replies,

Does it matter if the speakers are forward facing instead of being on an angle (Toe in i think the word is). The speakers i am using by the way are B&W 684 package,

It's amazing how many questions all have the same answer.

Try it and see. We don't live in your house, we don't know how your room works, we don't know what your set up sounds like, we don't have your ears.

It won't take you long to try different positions for your speakers, you are the only person who can tell you what sounds the best for you, so get tweaking.

Oh and when you've got it how you like it be sure to let the rest of us know so we don't have to bother messing about ourselves won't you?

I wouls normally just use the info i could find on the web but my living room is a little difficult (i think) i have loaded a VERY crude picture can you take a look and give some advice on speaker placement, ie distance appart the front speakers should be and direction to point.
I have been playing around with them but the wife goes mental as there are big metal spikes on the bottom. http://www.anothersite/forums/attac...t-speaker-placement-fo-5-1-setup-scan0001.jpg

I have tried to add a drawing but it went horribly wrong
