i just purchased a new TV (Samsung LE40C750) and looking to upgrade my old DVD player/ surround sound system.

it needs to be 5.1 or less as i dont have room for 7.1, needs to be blueray and 3D compatible (future proofing on the 3D front.

i have two main questions:

1- is it advisable to stick witht he same brand for best performance?

2- what system would you recommend?

1. No need to stick to the same brand at all..... Well.. Maybe that you might be able to use one remote to control both bits of kit, but that's it.

2. What's your budget? How involved do you want to get? You can get H.C.I.A.B (Home Cinema In A Box) all-in-one systems, that come with BD, amplification, speakers & most cabling. Or, you can go the more involved route and source all the elements indivdually. This will usually end up costing you more in the long run, but you should also gain a good leap in performance from your stuff.

i think a one box solution would make it much easier, so i will go with that.

budget wise i would say up to £600? not sure how realistic this is!

If you want to keep it in the family, you should be able to find the Samsung HT-C6930W for that kind of money without too much trouble. Otherwise, the Panasonic SC-BTT755 would get our vote.

i have seen the HT-C6930W online, but that's a 7.1 system. i don't have the room to have one of these 🙁

There are a few good one box systems about in your price range. A one box solution is a good idea but they do have a connectivity problem due to lack of HDMI inputs. EG: If you wanted to add sky+hd, a playstation or games console so check carefully before purchase.

yeah i have found quite a few, hence my quandary on which to pick 🙁

One of the other reasons I suggested the Samsung, which you could of course run in 5.1 mode - not that the rear speakers are exactly huge...

the photos on the Samsung site are confusing, i thought the additional speakers were to sit at the front far side (in front of the person watching i mean). looking at the user manual (page 17 on the instruction manual found here) it shows the speakers need to go at the back.
i can use this after all...

Traditionally, a 7.1 system consists of three front speakers (left, centre and right), two surround speakers (which go more to the side but can be a little bit behind) and two surround back speakers (which are behind the viewer) and of course the subwoofer.

my sofa is up against the wall, so the speakers will be right against it
on a floor stand, would this mean the speakers are too close to the viewer

I would say so personally.

You could try wall mounting them, or just using the system in a 5.1 configuration.

this has HDMI out only, so how would it be wired up into the V+ box?

V+ >>> E370 >>> TV using HDMI?

or

V+ >>>TV via hdmi and E370 >>> TV using a separate HDMI port?
