I'm looking to upgrade my AV system completely. at the moment I'm leaning towards the Pioneer VSX-LX50 receiver. How does the pio compare with the Onkyo 606, or any other receiver on the market. I was also thinking about getting a blu-ray player instead of a dvd player? as for speakers my mate has the MS Alumni's and I feel they would suit my small room as I can't seem to find a good 7.1 set up that won't blow my budget or distort the sound in my small space. What are your recommendations?

Have to ask, what drew you to the Pio LX50? I think getting a Blu-Ray player instead of a DVD player is a good ldea, unless you're not really interested in Blu-Rays. My advice is, check them out first (at a friends or a dealers) before you decide.

My boss has the pio vsx-lx70 and it sounded fantastic (the kef 3005's help as well) but my wallet can't stretch that far so I chose the lx50 on account of its connectivity features (ipod direct). But looking round, the Onkyo TX-SR606 seems capable (at half the price of the pio) while the 705 closely matches the pio in performance and beats it on price (649/599) I listen to music more often than watch movies and will require good musicality. Which does better in music dvd or blu-ray?

i recommend getting a separate cd player unless you are willing to shell out 5-600 for a marantz dv7001 which is a very capable cd dvd player iv heard of a few bug issues with certain dvds [i think marantz would sort this out with a firmware update of some sort though
if you dont want to spend this sort of money then maybe the marantz cd6002 @peter tyson 200 sheets and either the denon dvd1940 @prcdirect.co.uk for 150 sheets, for bluray at least 300 sheets ps3 or th panasonic cant remember the model though im sure someone else will!
