Help with these 2 units settings. Blu-ray (panasonic bdt130) pcm or bitstream. Tv (panasonic tx-p50x60b) pcm or auto. They will be connected as so. Blu-ray > hdmi cable > tv > optical lead > integrated amp (onkyo a9050) amp which has built in wolfson dac

Well, I can give you my experience from when I was fiddling with my Panasonic recently, though I understand that other models in the range might behave differently...

- Since you only want stereo, set the bluray player to PCM.

- As far as I can tell, you only have the option to choose PCM or bitstream on the TVs internal tuner - choose PCM. On the HDMI inputs there are no options (on mine) and the soundtrack from those inputs are always output as stereo through optical, irrespective of the settings on the player.

Hi guys.

Regards PCM and Bitstream settings, when you set to PCM, for instance on your Blu-Ray player it means the BD player is decoding the audio from the disc you are watching/listening to. If it's set to Bitstream it means you are sending the signal to you amp to do the decoing. This applies to your TV output and any other device that gives you these options.

In theory your AV Receiever will do a better job at decoding audio even if it's just stereo. I have sky so I don't know if your TV signal will out put 5.1 via the optical cable. My instinct tells me it will. I know you are only using a Stereo amp so can't listen to 5.1 in full. Any 5.1 signal will just get down scaled to 2 channel.

There's no reason why you are not recieving the same signal as us that have sky or virgin and the like so if you ever upgrade your amp to a surround sound receiver you should be able to enjoy 5.1 TV (when broadcast) without getting Sky or Virgin etc. etc. (anyone using Just TV with a surround reveiver please correct me if I'm wrong)

As we all say on here try both ways and see which way sounds best to you if there's any difference at all.

Ye makes sense. But dont want no new av upgrade as its not the surround sound or the high def picture i want. They dont bother me. I just wanted my blu-ray to play live music blu ray dvd's for the better sound if there in high res stereo. Like when i play flac threw my amps dac. Which sounds amazing.

Even on dvd a 5.1 Dolby digital or DTS track should sound better that a 2.0 PCM track. Granted it's dependent how the music wa recorded in the first place and how good the source material is. Better still if it's Bluray and it has a DTS HD-MASTER or Dolby TrueHD 5.1 that will sound way better than any 2 channel mix in my opinion.

Glad you are happy with just 2 channel. Let me know if my suggestion works. Would be nice to know.
