Hifi line out specifications?

Just for interest and a passing thought, but what are the line out specifications for a hifi separate? Presumably there is a standard somewhere dictating the range of voltage and current considered permissible, but I can't find it. Is it just some agreed norms, arrived at in hifi pre-history?

Hi Chris.

So far as I know, line out is about 2 volts. I know that my CDP gives this at 1KHz because I have used a test CD recorded off Clio at 0dB on the recorder. However, some pieces may be less. The norm used to be 775mV. Why it's gone up, I don't know.
