HI-FI vs. HOME CINEMA

Just wondering.....Which is more popular these days hi-fi or home cinema? Which one do you prefer and why?

what about tweaking the sound to your own personal taste without having to change amp,speakers etc?

When i first started putting my system together my priority was home cinema. Although this only whet my appitite for hi fi now I'm adapting

If you are talking in general, more people are into home cinema. It's fashionable and isn't seen as an anorak subject.

I've always been into hifi, but now have the mid-range of both worlds.ÿ

I watch more dvds than listening to music these days. But I have a seperate arcam amp for my stereo so that I have the best of both worlds

Thanks for all the replies guys. In my opinion, with the booming HD technology, home cinema is more popular. It is also more diverse. You can listen to your favourite music using your av receiver, but you can't watch your favourite movie with a dedicated pre/power/amplifier. I prefer to have both but home cinema is my priority.

I would like to say that one room works best, but I'm afforded a studio and a viewing room. In comparison to my B&W 803D's combined with a Classe CA-5100, my Onkyo 905 and Tangent Clarity 7.1 setup is nowhere near in audiophile clarity. It's not bad for the *usual* compressed pop garbage though!

Wow you have 803Ds!!!! They are big beasts. How different to everything else do they sound and what material do you feed them?

B&W really are different class, like *really* different class! The 803D's were the result of 8 months of research, and they stood out by a county mile! I did a lot of *remixing* and studio production in previous years, and certainly as studio monitors, they are something else. For anything like classical, jazz, blues - you hear *things* in pieces of music you never heard before, as for everything else - you hear all the studio engineer's failings in mastering! (They were probably using a set of JBL's or Peavey monitors for studio foldback! Nasty....

)

For the money, I can't recommend them highly enough - just make sure you put a *nice* amp on them, quality deserves (no, I'll rephrase, DEMANDS!) quality.
