HELP WITH CONNECTING BLU RAY HOME CINEMA,TV,SKYHD,HDD/DVD,WII AND PS3

HI,

I AM A TECHY NOVICE AND WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP IN GETTING THE BEST OUT OF MY SYSTEMS SO MY KIDS AND US CAN GET THE BEST EXPERIENCE POSSIBLE.

I HAVE JUST BOUGHT A SAMSUNG HT-BD1255 BLU RAY HOME CINEMA SYSTEM WHICH HAS

1 HDMI CONNECTION - Connect to TV

1 OPTICAL OUT - Connect to HT-BD1255

TV SCART - Connect to the HDD/DVD for archiving Sky+ programs to DVD-R?

A SAMSUNG HDD/DVD WHICH HAS

1 HDMI OUT - Connect to the TV

DIGITAL AUDIO OUT ( OPTICAL) -Optional - Do you use the HDD/DVD for playback of DVD's? If you do use this a lot, would you want surround sound? * If you did, you would need to add a 3 way manual optical switch as your home cinema system only has 2 inputs.

A PS3 WHICH HAS

DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) - Connect to HT-BD1255. Set audio to optical (should be bitstream by default)


HDMI OUT - Connect to TV

AND A WII WHICH HAS

AV MUTIOUT - I would strongly recommend buying a component cable. The Nintendo one will be the best one to get but also the most expensive. Run the red/white analogue audio to the Aux input on the HT-BD1255



* As you have Sky+HD, you won't probably use the TV's Freeview tuner much. If you wanted to run the TV and HDD/DVDR audio out to the home cinema system, you would need to buy a 3 way manual optical switch and use this to share one of the optical inputs, so that say PS3, TV and HDD/DVDR were connected to the switch and the switch output was connected to the HT-BD1255. You would need to manuall select which input you wanted to use on the switch and then select the relevant optical input on the HT-BD1255 ie. optical 1 or 2.

thanks very much d4v3pum4 for your detailed reply. can i just clarify a few points if you dont mind.

1. re the wii i have a nitentendo component cable which is currently plugged into what looks like a scart plug which in turn is plugged into the ex rgb1 scart socket on the back of the tv. do i just take out the white and red cables and plug them into the home cinema system aux in jacks and keep the yellow cable plugged into the existing scart plug currently plugged into the ex rgb1 scart socket on the back of the tv.

2. the tv only has 3 hdmi sockets but i have the ps3, home cinema, hdd/dvd and sky hd+box which all have hdmi sockets so how can i get round this as i am 1 hdmi socket short on the tv?

3. with the external digital input jacks on the home cinema system do i connect one of the cable from the home cinema to the sky hd+box and the other cable from the home cinema system to the 3 way optic switch which in turn has connected into it cables from the tv, hdd/dvd and ps3.

4. do i need to go into sound settings individually for the home cinema system, tv, hdd/dvd and sky hd box and if so what settings to do make in each of them.

The cable you're actually using is Composite video (CVBS) which is the lowest form of signal quality. The Component (YpBpR) cable is green/blue/red plus red/white for audio.

Oops, sorry missed that

. You have a couple of options. You could add an HDMI switch (See hdcable.co.uk for a cheap one. I use an Oppo HM31 3 way HDMI switch that is fully automatic) or use another connection e.g. Component video (as you're not using Component for the wii) or perhaps RGB SCART and then buy the Component video cable for the wii. There is very little in it between Component Video and RGB anyway. It basically comes down to how often you use the HDD/DVDR and if you're willing to compromise slightly. As it's not HD, I would use another connection. As you have mentioned the optical switch below, you could consider a Thor HDMI switch as they also switch digital audio, thus doing away with the need to manually switch. It doesn't really matter. It will come down to which source you watch the most. If that is Sky+HD, then yes, I would leave that on it's own input to save you switching all the time.

The TV's optical audio is probably active by default. The HDD/DVDR will need to be set to bitstream and I gave the settings above for the Sky+HD and PS3.
