Hi All,

New forum member. Hope you can help / advise.

I have recently upgraded my entire AV setup from 28"CRT + Denon AVF100 to the new Pioneer BDP-LX71 and SC-LX81 amp along with a Sony KDL-40W4500.

Very impressed with the set-up. Picture quality from the BDP is fantastic. Cars, Wal-E, Transformers etc look and sound fantastic. However, a couple of issues that I need some help / advice with:

1.) The BDP is very slow at power-on. I don't mean loading a BD (which I expected to take some time), but when the power button is operated to turn the machine on. It takes upto 60 seconds before it can be operated. If I press any button, "Please Wait" is diaplayed for a second before "Power On" comes back. Is this normal? It has done this from day 1 (Firmware 1.17) and still does it (upgraded to Firmware 1.21).

2.) The SC-LX81 is fantastic. Sound quality is excellent, even in stereo from CDs. Minor issue with video upscaling though. When compared to the KDL's built in upscaling from Sky+ (on SCART), the LX81 is brilliant (most of the time). However, on a more frequent than I would like basis, horizontal lines appear across the display. Very difficult to describe. Not white or black or like that, but more like an interlacing issue. Not sure if it's the LX81 or the KDL. Anyone else seen this?

3.) Also the LX81 upscaling. If the signal has a large white area (TV 'flashback' sequence or similar), then the HDMI input appears to reset, causing the screen to go blank for a few seconds. Anyone else seen this? This only happens with the Sky signal, not the BDP signal. Doesn't happen through the SCART signal.

Not sure what to make of the second two issues, having neither had an LCD TV, HDMI or an upscaler before. Can anyone advise or help please.

Thanks
Ian

Hi Ian,

Firstly, nice set-up, and congratulations to you.

I cannot help you with your questions in regards to your Pioneer SC-LX81 A/V Receiver.

However, I also have a Pioneer BDP-LX71 Blu-ray Disc Player, and while it takes a little while from when you push the "On" button on the Player or on the Player's remote to when it is ready to play, for mine (which I recently updated to version 1.17), the "little while" is approximately 25-30 seconds. 60 seconds sounds way too long, in my opinion.

Perhaps you might like to consult your Pioneer retailer, whom you purchased it from, or perhaps ring Pioneer directly.

All the Best, mate.

Dan.

Hi anianat, Been having issues also with video via the lx81.
Not sure how you have it connected, sounds like your using component video with the optical lead for sound.

I think the issue is that firstly you need to turn the HDMI control off.
Home menu,System setup, other setup, HDMI control setting.
Then exit, pull down the slide on the remote and press button number 1(signal sel).
By pressing this it gives you input options for the sound, the default is HDMI, so it is looking for sound from an HDMI but by doing so messes up the video. Try selecting this to SIGSEL DIGITAL.

Had a rethink you might not need to turn the HDMI control off.Try the Signal select first.

Thanks Del. Will try the settings later on and report back. For info, have Sky connected via svideo with sound via optical. HDMI control is on, but only so that I can get the PQLS function to operate when listening to CDs. BDP is connected via HDMI.

Thanks

No joy I'm afraid. SIGSEL is set to digital, but alas, same issues. It's almost as if the lx81 is buffering the video signal, and then can't quite transmit fast enough, so occasional juddering goes along with the line effect, which I have noticed seems to occur mostly in areas where the video signal also has horizontal lines (such as eye lids). Very intermittent.

I have times the lx71 start-up and it is between 55 and 60 seconds.

I think I'll take a trip back to the dealer to get his views.

Thanks anyway,

Ian

Had a look in the manual page 91, looks like you do have to set the HDMI control to off for it to work. HTH
