Help on linking 605 & stereo amp?

Hi everyone,

I'm sure everyone is bored of this topic.... but is it possible to link an Onkyo 605 to a stereo amp? I had a Yamaha E1000 which stopped working and there don't seem to be any similar products around these days. I've read a number of postings in the forums about linking AV receivers to stereo amps using pre-outs on the AV receiver but my understanding is that the 605 doesn't have these. Is that the case and is there another way of doing it? I think I used a tape loop to connect the Yamaha but it was designed to work with stereo amps. I really don't want to spend any more than the cost of the 605 on surround.

Thanks

Leo

Do you use the HD audio on the 605? If not, there are lots of cheaper receivers (mine included - see below) that have pre-outs. If you do, check with Onkyo as on the back of the receiver, next to subwoofer preout is Zone two front and left. I'm not sure, but you may be able to use these. I have my Sony receiver linked to my stereo amp and it works fine. The Denon budget receivers offer you that too. Also the new Onk (606) comes out soon and is going to be £400 also - that should have pre-outs also.

Yeah but I don't know if you can link the 605 through a tape loop like you could the E1000, especially with the auto-setup options these days?

From what I've read on this forum the 606 doesn't seem to have pre-out either although the 4 hdmi would be really handy. Previously I've only used prologic but I plan on buying a blu-ray player/recorder + Freesat at some point and use a Pioneer 530 pvr + SKY digibox presently. My experience is very basic so I have no idea how to wire any of this up or what all the sound formats mean, so I've no idea what I will need/use. I see in the photo's that it says pre-out but then shows just a sub-woofer output. I assume that I need this to drive the sub, but I think my current sub was driven via speaker sockets. Having disconnected everything I've no idea how it all went together (should have taken a digital snap... but too late now!) and I've no idea whether I can use the extra speaker outputs somehow?

The Denon 2808 is available at £600. This is a better receiver than the 605 and definitely has pre-outs. If you want HD audio and pre outs, this is the way to go. It only has 2 hdmi inputs but you don't have Sky HD (and if you did, you could use component) and you will be fine with just 2. Let us know what your equipment is exactly, and I or someone else could explain how to set it all up. Believe me, it's not difficult - a year ago, I did not have a clue, now I find it straightforward (to a point!).

The rest of the kit will be changing when funds allow. Currently thinking of Naim Nait 5i/CD or Leema Pulse/Stream (see other post), but I'd prefer to invest more in the stereo side than the surround side. I don't have Sky HD but I will get a Freesat box, pvr, and Apple TV (or similar) as soon as I can.
I'm afraid I could never remember how to connect the E1000 so I'm not sure I'll ever get the hang of all the latest stuff! One thing I don't get is that on the Leema they go on about having extra functions to make connecting surround easier. Any idea what they mean and does my choice of new amp make it easier to connect a surround amp? I guess the question is do I need the pre-out on the surround, stereo amp, or both?
