Please can yon help! I have been looking for a home cinema system for about a month. My living room is 6m x 3.2m and I have been looking at the Onkyo TX-SR 876 AV recever with Tannoy Murcury speakers (centre FC, front F1's, surround and surround back F4's) with a Tannoy TS8. Do you think this will work well or do you have anyother suggestions. My budget is around £1200. Any advice you can give would be a great help.

The Onk and Tannoys are both well liked pieces of kit, so should work well. Of course there is a large element of personal preference, so some people like one five starÿreviewedÿpiece of kit better than another, so ideally a home test would be preferable. Few of us get that chance though.

ÿWith the big room, positioning is probably important. If your sitting position is 4.5 or 5 metres down the long arm of a rectangular room, you may have a lovely set up for real surround, but is you are sitting along the short arm, and there is a big space open on one side ( (say a open plan into a dining space, like I have), some fiddling with positioning may be needed. ÿ

If you are not committed to those, there are alternative options, especially with the amp.ÿ

I am sat about 4m away from the screen so should get a good sound set-up. What other amps do you think I should look at?

I think the Onk is available for around £700 or so?

In that up to £1000 region, I think the amp to beat is probably the Yamaha 1900. That is why it is in short supply right now. I have its babyÿbrotherÿthe 863SE, also pretty good at around £500. ÿ
