HELP! My Floor is joining in on the Party! ;)

Hello Everyone!

I am using a pair of Tannoy DC2 Floorstanders, on occassions when I decide to crank them up, my floor decides to join in on the Party!

The DC2's are using Spikes, piercing through the carpet. I would be grateful to get some suggestions, as to how best reduce the amount of vibration being transmitted into the wooden floor beneath the carpet.

A popular and cheap option is to buy a couple of granite/marble chopping blocks from argos or tesco or any one of many outlets and stand the speakers on these. I guess if its really bad you could try four.

Thanks for the suggestion that sounds like a good idea. Just looked them up and they are indeed dead cheap!

simples....8 X 1 inch pozidrive screws.......

straight through carpet into floorboards, rest spikes in cups of screws....be prepared to be amazed, i had the same problem in london.

floorboards on concrete pillars, it sounded horrible....this works....

hi, i actually think the spikes are increasing your problem - they are linking your speakers/stands/vibrations directly to the floorboards.
if you like using the spikes though then one very cheap method you can try to remedy this is by using squash balls cut in half under each speaker(4 halves under each speaker) - this will help to reduce the vibrations travelling to you speakers stand.
i use this method together with the granite boards, suggested above, with great success.

Another vote for screws through to the floorboards. The other advantage of this method is that it is very easy to get the speakers dead level on all axis. This will also make them more stable.

Thank You for all of the advice.

Popped down to Tesco's this morning and picked up the Granite Chopping Boards, to use as isolation platforms. Think im gonna have a go with the tennis ball idea too.

The Granite Boards added under the speakers, have made quite a dramatic difference.

Sound is now much more punchy and clear. Everything seems much less cluttered.

Most cost effective upgrade i think ive ever done.

HURRAY FOR WHFSAV FORUMMM!!!!!!!!!!! ....... and tesco

glad to see your situation is improving. i mentioned earlier using the squash balls cut in half - there are however products specifically designed to do what you need and i have used them with great success (so much so i now have them under all my audio equipment). here is a link to the products i mean:

Like the look of those, i also notice that they're significantly more affordable than the other alternatives i often see.

Alternatives i see made from wood and aluminium, are obviously more expensive materials, however i simply will not pay £40-50 for a set of four!

I am a big fan of the chopping boards too. I was told on another forum about this solution, with the added extra of halved squash balls underneath. Works a treat.

I was just wandering people if there is a point at which you can provide to introduce to many components when trying to isolate equipment.

e.g would it be best to use those squash balls underneath speakers as well as under neath each of the chopping boards, is there scientific ideas that suggest, it would be better in a certain way. e.g squash balls on only speaker spikes. then onto chopping boards
