I'm in the market for a 40" / 42" new TV to replace my 36" SONY CRT (nothing bigger as it won't fit). My budget is £1500, which had me looking at the Sony 40Z4500 and the Panasonic Viera TH-42PZ800. Are there any other considerations to make in this, I'm also taken by the new Panasonic 42V10, but I really wanted a set by May, and I'm unsure if this model will be availablie in time (British Lions in South Africa in HD starts 30th May).

Any and all help welcome.

With a 40-42" television set you should be looking to navigate out to at least six feet.

The room is rectangle in shape - minimum viewing distance is 8ft / Max distance is 15ft. The porblem is the TV is on th wall with the door into the room, hence the retriction, guess I could stretch to 46" as an absolute maximum, but I rather stay in the 40" / 42" catergory and aim for one of the higher spec models.

Thanks

Iïm looking at the panasonic 42" v10 (or 50") as well, but according to play.com it comes out on 31st may for 1299.99 - not sure if it will be out in stores before then, but its supposedly 200 pounds cheaper online. It should take 3-5 days to deliver, but Iïm waiting for WHF review before taking the plunge.

My main concern with the 42V10 will be sound quality, due to the thinner panel size. Iv'e listen to the 42PZ800 and was mightly impressed so the new model has got to be good.

Any other models worth considering???

I had considered the new sony 40w5500, but having read the trouble many people seem to have had with backlight bleed on this set and its predecessor the 40w4500, and sonyïs refusal to accept this as a fault, I think iïll be going with the v10.

Having said that, the Samsung UE40B7020 with LED backlighting looks quite good (5 stars from WHF) - but it seems to struggle with sd tv broadcasting, so I think Iïll stick to Plasma for the moment (until I read the review anyway), unless I see a great review on something else between now and then which has good sd picture.

Personally I would hang on a couple of months and demo the V10. Worst case scenario is that you'll save even more on the PZ800. ÿ

But the same applies to the Sonys too. If you want good sound invest in a home cinema, much better than even the PZ800 will be.

V10 is scheduled for May.
