Hi all,

I picked up an LG 42LD490 last Fri in the Amazon price ditch - a tasty £398. It has to go back though as it has a raft of dead pixels smack in the middle of the screen :(

It's currently out of stock and will be for about a month or two. I can have my cash back or wait. Currently I;m waiting BUT I spotted the Sammy LE40C580 and thought it looked good.

The LG seems a little "blocky" at times. It also seems to do some nasty dithering/banding when I play a PS3 game with a black room with a light source in it - you see the gradient halos... this might be that game I suppose but not sure.

I hade a 32" 720p Sammy before and it was awesome for the past 3 years. I really need some help as there are basically no reviews on either set. I want the TV for gaming (PS3 & Xbox 360) and watching Blu-Rays predominantly.

Thanks everyone!

Can't speak for the LE40C580 but got aÿLE37C580 a fortnight ago and I really like it. My first choice was a Sony 100Hz, but couldn't justify the price and to be honest I'm not even remotely disappointed with the Samsung now that it's here. Easy to set up, easy to use, blu-ray stunning (via Sony BDPS370) and Freesat (HD and SD) picture is excellent too, with only basic HDMIs costing a bit less than £20 each. Audio is better than I expected though it's obviously a bit thin compared to playing digital in through the hi-fi. All in all, I'm really chuffed with the Samsung.

Edit 1 - sorry, don't do gaming, so 'no comment' on that aspect!

Edit 2 - forgot to mention...the Samsung swivel stand base is really practical and helpful !

Samsung if far better TV set. It has 4x better contrast and black reproduction (PVA vs IPS panel). Also, Samsung has much better picture processing. There is only one thing where LG beat Samsung: viewing angle. But Samsung has good viewing angle, too...

Thanks for the responses guys. I will order down the Sammy and do an in-home comparrison. The LG seems a great set - until the picture gets dark or has lots of effects on it (like smoke etc) - then it seems to go dithered and struggle a little.

Thanks once again.

How about the Sony 40EX40B with build-in Blu Ray/DVD player - it even got non-reflective screen.

I have my PS3 for Blu-Rays and a Sony DVD Home Theatre setup for DVDs so no need of the extras really ;) Plus it's a little more than I wanted to spend on a mid-ranger :D
