I thought I would share my Heath Robinson attempt at a vacuum record cleaning machine. Not as pretty as many DIY efforts I have seen on the web, but it works extremely well.
I wanted to make one as cheaply as possible, under £50 was my target.
I had a Spin Clean but I wasn’t convinced that it actually made much difference sometimes. The before and after is amazing with this home made one though.
I don’t understand how companies can get away with charging £500+ for what is basically a box with a vacuum motor, some tubing and a turntable device.
This took me a couple of months to make, most of that was spent scouring the internet / car boots / hardware stores for suitable parts.
The self adhesive camera light trap material was a tip I picked up on a forum thread somewhere. Cut two strips and stick along the edge of the slot in the clear vacuum tube to protect the vinyl surface.
The only slightly exotic tools I needed to do this were a Dremel to cut the slot in the clear tube and the drill bit hole cutter. I already have a Dremel so just needed to buy the hole cutter.
Sits nicely in my office at home until needed, then it easily wheels out.
This was so easy to make and it works like a dream.
I made an improvement today. A block of wood to lock the vacuum tube in place during cleaning. I was holding it by hand previously. (Last two pics)
Maybe a motor next…….
