Hi

I am thinking about purchasing some new headphones for around £100-£200. I don't know much about headphones and would appreciate some guidance. I also wouldn't mind getting a hot deal for these too, so links to good deals would be appreciated too. I have had a little look around and saw the Bose noise cancelling headphones (the Bose CQ15), that I liked the look of, but I don't really need noise cancelling but something similar and cheaper would be great.

So what do you think?

I'm in the same position and have settled on either the Philips Fidelio L2 or the Sony MDR 1-R. I just need to listen to them with my kit to see which suits better. There are loads of other possibilities in this price bracket. It depends on what you listen to and where you listen to it. The Phillips are semi open, so may not be suitable in a noisy environment, but will have a more open soundstage, whereas the Sonys are closed, better sound insulation, but smaller soundstage.

I've recently purchased the Sony MDR1-R as my first non IE headphones, mostly to use when I need to listen from my iThings.

I find them very decent but do need a bit of volume to bring the best out of them, they do feel open to me, but after IEs that maybe a natural feeling and whilst they are closed back you are not islolated from noise around you

I got a deal on thes and paid £100, and I am very pleased to date

Just have to be a bit careful as I think headphones and choices are much like the rest of hi fi and a/v; upgraditis may take over once you have your first pair...........!

For your budget, I would recommend 2 models:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-Momentum-On-Ear-Headphones-Ivory/dp/B00D77UA44/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398679215&sr=8-1&keywords=sennheiser+momentum+on-ear

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bowers-Wilkins-P3-On-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0082AQ81U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398679473&sr=8-1&keywords=B%26W+P3

Slightly higher budget:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bowers-Wilkins-P5-On-Ear-Headphones/dp/B003IHUHGE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398679530&sr=8-1&keywords=B%26W+P5

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-Momentum-Closed-Circumaural-Headphone/dp/B009QV15DU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398679564&sr=8-1&keywords=sennheiser+momentum+over+ear

This is at a higher budget, but discounted and superb:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bang-Olufsen-BeoPlay-Headphones-Aluminium/dp/B00C4VFYFY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398679636&sr=8-1&keywords=B%26O+H6

You've got this as well, at a much higher budget:

Cheers guys, that is great! I think I like the B&W pairs (didn't even though they did some, or forgot). Tried on some Bose today in Tesco, the CQ15 and the AE2W but I found them too big for my ears. So I think a B&W pair will do great. Just eyeing them up now. I would like to try them on first though, so a trip to John Lewis will be next on my list, and possibly Currys too.

 Much appreciated!

Do these expensive headphones keep well? My current Sennheiser PX100 have ripped on the earphones and just wondered whether this was a re-occurring thing? Or not?

Yes, they should keep well. Both B&W and Sennheiser are brilliant options. Just bear in mind that the P3 is rather small, so make sure you check it out before buying.

Yep, I don't think I want a pair that covers my whole ear but also don't want them too small. I like the Bang Olufsen pair too but think they are too expensive - I can't seem to find any deals on them? Yeah, I think I need to now try them on.

I would agree with checking out the B&W P3 first before buying.

I have a pair, they sound great and are very comfortable but I do find they slip about quite a bit and fall off.

The cable does not seem to be very robust, no problems so far, but it is very easily repalced though. My kids have busted a couple of pais of headphones with captive leads.

I think the Phillips Fidelio x1's are a great pair of headphones, I got an as new pair from Amazon for £112.

I've compared them to the B&W P5 all the grado's upto Sr225i and they are much better in every department (sound, bulid, comfort, looks)

I looked at the X1 as well, but they are only suitable for home use only. Do a search for reviews of the X1 and L2. The L2 is getting some glowing reviews.

The Momentums are worth a listen as well, as are the AKG 550, which sound amazingly open for closed headphone, but they are massive and some people have complained about a poor fit resulting in loss of bass.

main thing is to try before you buy if you can. At least Amazon have a good returns policy.

Happy listening

I have a pair of AKG q701s. Very neutral which I like but others have reportedly found them a bit bass-light which is fine be me. Anyway, a good deal on the similar K702 s which many people prefer can be found here:

You could have a look at these http://www.gak.co.uk/en/beyerdynamic-dt-880-pro-semi-open-professional-studio-headphones-250-ohm/30063?gclid=CP3u1Kzdg74CFQcTwwod9ZUA4Q very well regarded headphones; check out the reviews, or these http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/recording-studio/detail.asp?stock=13040917392332&gclid=CLrwpvfdg74CFYrjwgodOVAAmQ

Both are excellent if you like an accurate headphone without the smiley frequency response you get with so many. I've listened to both but in the end I upped my budget and got the Sennheiser HD650. They are really good.
