HDMI cable

Hi, i am trying to get the best possible picture from my Sky HD box.

I have just upgraded the cable from the LNB to the box to WF100 and now have between 85 to 100% signal strength with 100% quality on both inputs.

The only upgrade now available is to change the HDMI cable between the Sky HD box and my Samsung UB46B8000 tv.

Would the Chord Company Active HDMI cable be overkill for a Sky box or is it better suited to just a blu ray player?

Thanks for your help.

Andy.

My thoughts would be to but a £5 ThatCable 1.5m HDMI and see what you think. If you think that's good enough, great, if not you've only wasted a fiver and then look at the Chord Active HDMI (which I think might be a bit of overkill for a 1080i signal from a Sky box).

Personally I'd say Chord's Active HDMI cable is overkill for Sky. One of the major benefits of the Active cable is the increase in sound quality (as well as some benefits with picture), but given it's best to use an optical cable with Sky so you can get 5.1, you won't be using it to its full potential. I'd say the Supershield or one of the QED cables would be a better bet, though as always, it's best to buy from somewhere where you can get a no quibble money back guarantee if you don't think it's worth the extra cash.

Andy. Complete overkill...

Aside from the fact i see no difference in PQ between freebie, cheap and expensive HDMI cables,to me spending more on a HDMI cable than is spent on the manufacture of a Sky+HD is ludicrous.

I use a Supershield from the Sky HD box and I am more than pleased with the results, well worth the spend

I also do use a Chord Active but that is from the BDP to the amp, only for the extra lift in sound quality

Hi,

I use the Chord Active 1.5m with my SkyHD box and find the picture and sound superior to the 'Thatcable' i own. Cable will help if sound is a little 'tinny' from your tv otherwise Supershield should drive the same picture improvements. Maybe worth spending a little extra on a Tacima Mains Conditioner (£30), made a big difference to my SD and HD picture plus greater separation in sound. In my setup the Mains Conditioner made the greatest improvement, far better than a change of HDMI lead, simply because TV,BD player etc. all benefit from the removal of noise. Acts as a surge protector too.

Best Wishes,

hdmi cables do make a PQ difference possibly better highlighted with higher-spec equipment?

one thing i did notice and was disappointed with was the Chord supershield compared to the Chord Active, the supershields picture in comparison seemed 'flat' and it seemed literally a layer of detail had been removed. i kept switching the cables between sources and was surprised how much so. my conclusion was i wish i never brought the supershield and had brought 2 actives.

quality counts sometimes..

sheehanjuk,

Thats cheating, everybody knows that Pioneer Kuro's can make Straw look like gold! In fact from what i have read on posts and comments plasma's in general don't show as much variation in picture quality between source quality. Difference is really visible on my LCD kit. Cables have to suit though, i use a £5 Alba one for my PS3 as it gives better movement, Chord Active for Sky HD as i see greater depth and less noise and Thatcable for LCD TV and PJ as it holds really strong edge definition. No pattern what so ever!

You have a great kit list there

Kind Regards,

Cookie Monster
