Hi all,

My brother has just been in the blower asking for some help with his set up.

He currently has a front room system of a Pioneer Kuro/Onkyo 606/Kef 3005se and Sky HD,

All works as it should.

He has bought a new Sony 40ex503 for his bedroom and wants to watch from his Sky HD box, to satisfy that it is possible(before he chases out walls etc) he has prurchased a 10m HDMI cable as well as a splitter, he has split the signal from the Sky box and has managed to get pictures to the second TV, however there is no sound.

He wonders if the optical out from the SKY box is the problem or if it is something else

Any ideas?

thanks in advance.

I do what he's trying to do to four tvs. HDMI splitter to four TVs. All work flawlessly.

Sound in the main room goes through the optical, so that's not the cause of the issue.

I tried the Cat5 system before. Worked ok until the box failed, but i don't think that's a fault of the technology. Although i did occasionally have "handshake" issues that i don't have now with HDMI.

Not sure about that. I'd turn everything on except the TV he's trying to feed, and then turn that on last.

Is the sound on the second TV coming through the TV itself, or is it running through an amp?

Hi,

he will try as you suggest.

The Sound will come from the TV itself, the HDMI goes from from splitter on the back of the Sky box directly into the TV,

He is monitoring this thread, he cannot comment as he is not a member of the forum

thanks

Just check he is splitting at the sky HD box and not after the AVR, if it's after the AVR he needs to ensure it is set to AVR+TV for audio (it sounds to me like the problem is, it's set to audio=AVR).

Hi Jammoe,

I too want to do this.

Can you tell us what HDMI splitter you bought and cost etc ....

Also, over longer runs have you experienced any issues with hdmi cables ( have you tried / compared different makes ) ?

Incidently, I also think it must be to do with his Onkyo settings and not the Sky box. It has to be the send sound to tv and amp hdmi setting surely ?

I use a Neet splitter that i got from either Amazon or Keane electronics. I think the four way splitter was about £60-£70.

Got a mixture of cables; the one travelling the furthest was a bit pricey (for the fact that it's going to the second (rarely used) bedroom). It's 20M and was about £50 and is a Neet cable. To be honest, it's my least favorite cable of the lot. It works fine, but it's so thick that it was a right pain to run through / around the wallspace / flooring.

The other two long cables are each 15M and were just the cheapest i could find at the time (£15-£20 each, from Amazon). Never had an issue with them at all.

I have a QED something or other HDMI to go to the main TV. Even though the signal is being split four ways to get to the TV the picture is absolutely fine (as it is on all the TVs).

(And i run regular co-ax to each room to return the remote control commands. Just dirt-cheap co-ax and a homebase aerial splitter/combiner)

I just haven't had an issue with the HDMI solution since i put it in. I got random handshake issues with the Cat 5 setup every two or three weeks. Just needed a reboot of everything to solve it, but once you're in bed the last thing you wanna do is run around the house unplugging things. And, of course, when i wanted to run the Sky to other TVs in the house, the Cat 5 was no longer a cost-effective solution.
