I am thinking of buying the panasonic dmp bd30 blu ray player. I currently have a yamaha dsp-ax757se amp which has no hdmi! What will be the best connection for sound between the two? coaxial, optical or the five analogue outputs? also ive been told that i will still be able to listen to hd audio if the blu ray disc is uncompressed pcm. is this true?

Yes, if you connect the Blu-ray player to your amp using the analogue six-channel out/six-channel inputs you'll be able to listen to uncompressed PCM soundtracks.

Now i'm confused.

I've read in reviews (at least i think i did) that the only way to get the HD Audio from the BD30 was to play it through a compatible amp, ie, Onkyo 605 or above, and that the signal had to go through the HDMI connection.

Hi Steve

It depends on the audio format on the disc. Anything which is encoded in one of the new HD formats e.g. TrueHD, DTS HD MA etc. will need to be bitstreamed through the HDMI connection to an amp that can decode it. However, if the disc has an uncompressed PCM soundtrack, this doesn't need to be decoded so can be sent over the 5.1 channel analogue outputs straight to your amp for Hi-Def sound.

Thanks for the info.

Could these same signals be passed via an optical cable, or is it only analogue ?

Too many inputs, outputs, connectors, and audio/video formats for my little brain to comprehend. It's a bit of a jungle for anyone, like myself, who is fairly new to home cinema technology.

No an optical cable wouldn't have sufficient bandwidth to carry uncompressed PCM sound. It's too much information for it to handle. You'd need an analog connection for each channel from out of the back of the Bluray. You can use optical for your Denon because the soundtracks on standard DVDs are much more compressed. I know it's confusing but stick with it. You'll get there.
