Firstly, thank you to all who have replied to the other posts. I thought I would start a fresh one in the hope of cathing more fish and I can see others are having the same problem:

Yamaha AV-R 1065 only displays PCM / Pro Logic 2 when watching Bluray and Sky HD.

I have set up Sony BD360 as suggested by maxflin and this did produce a Dobly Digital symbol when on the 'menu' screen of a bluray disc. Once the movie started, it went back to PCM / Pro Logic 2, and the Sky HD box is set to output Dolby Digital.

1. Why will the amp not display HD Audio or Dolby Digital?

2. Have I yet to hear the benefits of my new amp??

3. What am I listening to when PCM is displayed???

4. Is the amp faulty????

Please help!!!

Nick,

Sky HD boxes dont output Dolby Digital through HDMI. You will have to connect the Sky box to the amp with an optical lead, and assign that input to pair with the Sky HDMI input. You will then get Dolby Digital

Hope that helps

Right, I have not read your previous posts but it seems to me that your Sony is decoding the sound format (whether DolbyD or DTS) onboard and sending the PCM signal to your amp. If you want your amp to show the relevant HD brand logo on it's display you need to change the setting in your blu ray player to output sound as 'bitstream'. Either way you will be listening to HD sound it's just which component is doing the decoding to PCM. You should note that PCM is a digital representation of an analogue signal. All sound in the digital world is converted (if necessary) to PCM before passing to a DAC for processing to an analogue signal.

thx chudleighpaul and matt.

I have an optical lead from sky box and a HDMI. Are yousaying that the amp is taking the sound from the HDMI lead and there is a way of telling the amp to listen to the optical lead?

I'll check the player is set to bitstream again, though I think it is alraady as maxflin suggested.

PCM: Is HD audio not a digital signal then? (

nick , there was some assignment issues between this years yamahas and sky hd , read the rxv765 review and you will see it, it probably affects your amp too , there is a firmware fix that you can download from yamahas website that sorts it , it could be the problem with sky solved anyway ...

SEE PAGES 20 AND 44 IN YOUR USER MANUAL

As far as ur bluray goes it sounds like u have the audio (HDMI) setting set to 2ch PCM by mistake.

connect bdplayer to amp using the hdmi and then....

- Set "BD Audio Setting" to "Direct" in the "Audio Settings"

- Set "Audio Output Priority" to "HDMI" in the "Audio Settings"
- Set "Audio (HDMI)" to "Auto" in the "Audio Settings

All sorted!!

After an half hour or so on the phone with a very helpful chap at Yamaha Technical support (credit where credit is due, most helpful and in no (apparent) rush at all) I now get DD from Sky and HD audio from the bluray.

I did already have the latest firmware version, but as maxflin said, I did still need to assign AV4 optical to pair with HDMI 4.

The bluray was a little more tricky, nothing seemed to work, even a new HDMI lead (just in case). So we did a factory re set and it works perfectly now!

Happy days!

thanks to all on here, max ans strapped as usual, and of course to Yamaha tech.

Glad you got there in the end Nick!

Now you've got over the stress of setting up, how do you find the Yamaha? What do you find to be the most effective settings for DVD/Blu Ray playback? Sharing this kind of info is helpful. My initial feeling was that the best results were achieved by using the Pure Audio mode. Now I'm sold on using the straight decode function (without enhancer) and using the adaptive DRC mode (a more advanced method of dynamic range control). Everything sounds crisp and clear (including dialogue) and it's neighbour friendly without feeling like you're losing any portion of the audio...

nice one nick

, at last eh , well time to enjoy it now , im still getting used to the settings on my own , not a bit intuitive , takes a few weeks to get on top of it..

i think pure direct is the best strapped , im heading down to my dealer again tmw , changing my rear br1s to the brfx dipole bipole ones , for a small fee of course , and choosing a new cd player

, its aaaalllllll good

Yeah, I'd love some bipole or dipole rears. The B&Ws that would match tonally with the rest of my set up are old now, yet still cost upward of £500, so more than I spent on my receiver. I'm still trying to find a solution to this problem, so any advice is welcome. I'm not keen on spending a lot of cash on rear speakers from a different manufacturer. I used to use Mission dipole rears, but these were not a good match tonally with B&W front and centre speakers. Perhaps B&W M1s would match well? Though these of course are monopole speakers. Then I'd love to upgrade to a standalone Blu Ray player instead if using my (fat and noisy) PS3... and so on...

Sounds like you're building quite a system there, Max! This whole home cinema malarkey is endlessly addictive; and unfortunately endlessly expensive!

hi strapped , yes it certainly is addictive , i cant believe ive blown so much money on av lately , but at least im nearly finished , yes im very happy with my choices , i was thinking of buying a panasonic 3dtv this year , but i wont , theres no content out there , ill wait till next year ..

Agreed! We all have to draw the line somewhere. I'm not scrambling to jump on the 3D bandwagon myself, either. I might be in a minority here, but I'm not even remotely interested in it. Maybe in five years time, if all available televisions are 3D ready, I'll opt in!

I'm more than happy to enjoy what I've got, rather than endlessly thinking that if I spend more I can squeeze that little bit extra out of my system. Then again, that standalone Blu Ray player would be nice; or the dipole rears; and my B&W front and centre speakers are nearly ten years old now... Aw, guess there's no escape!

aye , thats the last piece of the jigsaw , next weekend hopefully

Plan is to watch a few movies through, then tweak a bit. I need to enjoy it a bit now!

I will stick with 'straight', get the sub volume right, which I find I normally need to watch a few different things to know what is the best setting for the sub.

I should have called Yamaha in the first place, but thought I would end up with some annoying plum, who knew even less than me, sitting in front of a PC following a some basic procedure.

How wrong was I!
