HD Audio Decoding - Older Amp

I am about to take the jump into the world of HD, however, my older amp (Yamaha DSP - AX757SE) isn't capable of decoding any HD audio formats. Some of the reviews do mention the ability of certain BluRay players being able to decode and output HD Audio via analalogue output.

Will I lose anything in the sound quality if I decide to use this method versus upgrading to an amp that can decode via optical/digital input?

you will not. but you will have an HDMI cable to the TV and 8 interconects (well up to) to the amp. some times lip sinc can be a pain to get right.

Depends entirely on what Blu-Ray player and what amp you get. Remember that when using the analogue outputs on the Blu-Ray player, you're using the DAC within the Blu-Ray player, whereas using the HDMI means the DAC within the amp is used. Also, upgrading to a better amp might well yield a better sound, just because it might be a better amp than the one you have currently of course!

However, if you mean can you still get the HD audio formats using that method, then yes, you absolutely can so this should sound better than connecting in via an optical to your current amp.

Just to make it clear as well, HD audio can only be sent digitally to an amp via the HDMI lead, not digital optical / coax.

From the look of the spec sheet on your amp, it has neither HDMI or multi channel audio inputs. Hence I don't think you will be able to output HD sound with this amp. (await clarification from others!). Hence you need to buy a new amp with your BD player and all your HD sound problems will disappear.

Hi badgerset. i had the 757 and also a panasonic bd30. whilst i waited for a new amp i used the analogue outputs on the bd30 to send the hd audio. the bd30 didnt decode true hd and dts master audio though so could only receive hd tracks that were uncompressed PCM. once u get a blu ray player that can decode onboard u will be fine. and for what its worth i thought the 757 was a very good amp!
