Harmon Karbon hd990

Hi,

I just read a review of the new HK hd990 in Australian Hifi and they were raving about it, he said it had exceptional soundquality for its price. It even has balanced and unbalanced connections. The reviewer ended up buying one he was so impressed. Has any one listened to one - what did you think?

I have one, partnered with a HK 990 amp and it's absolutely wonderful!!! You have to listen to it. I absolutely hated Harman Kardon products, but when got hold of the 990 combo fell in love with it- raw power, yet detailed and elegant sound. I'm now gonna build around it and make a proper 2.2 setup with it including 2 System Audio Ranger on fronts and 2 Rel T1 subs, as the 990 has DSP bass setup wich lets you do wonders with low frequencies.
HK doesnt have a good opinion here due to it's crappy AV products, so you wont get praise for the 990, they love it in the States and Germany though...

HK dropped off the 2-channel radar to some degree, but they make some fine stuff and the HK980/990 range is worth checking up on. I agree that the spec for both the 990 CD and amp look very impressive. The latter clocks in at around £900 for the amp, but the CD although retailing officially at £500 can be found for circa £380 (online only I think, so interested buyers ought to do a search if they want a demo).

It's a good looking bit of kit and shares similar tech specs to that in the Cambridge 840C which is substantially pricier.

I think along with the missed SA7001 KI reviews for Marantz, this is my other big "how did WHF miss this one" bugbear!

Must admit, if I was shopping round for an amp or CDP in the respective budgets, I'd really have a look at these two.

The HK 980 and 990 has gotten great reviews over here too and the 980 edged out the similarly priced NAD 326bee in both power and soundquality. The HD980 was outclassed by the Nad 545bee cd player though.

Have to agree. The current Harman range is superb. The HD990 is great and the only thing that lets you know it is not £1000 player is the build quality. The HK990 amp on the other hand is simply amazing and together an excellent combination for less than £1400.

Both are well worth an audition.

Will you be doing a review on the Harmon Kardon HD 990? It would be great to do a comparison between the HK the new rotel cd player and the Nad cdc545bee with the other models (Marantz 6003, CA 650c etc).
