So, picked up the second-hand Planar 3 and brand new, fresh in the box Fono yesterday, and after a trip to the theatre managed to get them set up and spinning a few discs.

Volume wasn't too loud (it was almost 11pm with kids in bed) but wow!

Even though my cartridge is the same, the difference in sound is night-and-day. Talk about clarity!

It seems I have found the weak link in my set-up. The control added by the phono stage is incredible. The one criticism of my speakers I've made previously is a propensity for a little too much bass. Solved. The Rega just grabs the bass and seems to say "That's great, but not all at once". I was grinning from ear to ear.

Albumns used were Placebo (Loud Like Love), Dire Straits (Brohters in Arms), Oasis (What's the Story), and The XX (XX)

Lastly, a wee shout out to Cymbiosis who once again were superb. The time taken to set up the TT (no easy task with the chunky 2M cart and RB300 arm) is much appreciated, and was no trouble for them.

I've had mine for around 30 years and it still sounds good, to my ears, especially so since I added a Goldring 1042. That said, at some point I need to replace it as the motor doesn't seem as stable as it once was, and it would be nice to have a new toy to play with.

For the money, you can't go wrong

Love it when people buy used kit and get so much enjoyment from it. There's so much enjoyment still to be had from other people's "cast offs", and quite possibly with turntables they're being disposed of by maybe surviving relatives with no interest in records. More fool them I say, but one person's unwanted cast off is the next person's bargain of the century. Happy days.

Keep deck, replacing motor is cheap. I might also suggest an Origin Live upgrade motor kit ;-)

Thanks guys. And yes, that is the same chap. He looked very busy with rack upon rack of LP12s under his care last night!

My TT was played through the new Brio R, and I have to say, it sounds at first listen like a pretty awesome little amp for the price....

Yeah, I could do that. The deck is starting to look a bit tired now though, needs a new lid among other things. It spent 7 years in the loft, which didn't help cosmetically. I just feel it's time for a change/upgrade. Won't be for a while yet though, 'she' has plans *yes3* *sorry2*
