So, picked up the second-hand Planar 3 and brand new, fresh in the box Fono yesterday, and after a trip to the theatre managed to get them set up and spinning a few discs.
Volume wasn't too loud (it was almost 11pm with kids in bed) but wow!
Even though my cartridge is the same, the difference in sound is night-and-day. Talk about clarity!
It seems I have found the weak link in my set-up. The control added by the phono stage is incredible. The one criticism of my speakers I've made previously is a propensity for a little too much bass. Solved. The Rega just grabs the bass and seems to say "That's great, but not all at once". I was grinning from ear to ear.
Albumns used were Placebo (Loud Like Love), Dire Straits (Brohters in Arms), Oasis (What's the Story), and The XX (XX)
Lastly, a wee shout out to Cymbiosis who once again were superb. The time taken to set up the TT (no easy task with the chunky 2M cart and RB300 arm) is much appreciated, and was no trouble for them.
