Afternoon all, I'm looking at the option to hang a plasma/lce on the fake chimney breast above a gas fire however I'm concerned that it can't be done. I've done a bit of research and found that one of the only gas fires that allow this is a Gazco Studio open fronted fire. The fire is a wide slim version so that the TV doesn't need to go right next to the ceiling however has anyone else done a similar thing ans if so what are their thoughts? Is it something I should stear clear of and just stick with having the TV in the corner of the room? Also, I'll se sitting about 3 meters away from the TV...can I get away with a 50" or should I stick with getting a 42"? Thanks for your help in advance! Rob

If it were me, I'd avoid it - it's a lot of money to spend if it breaks due to the heat. You can always get a wall bracket like my parents have which allows the TV to be flat against the wall in the corner of the room (so it's unobtrusive) , but tilted out at an angle when you want to watch it.

On size, I think 50" is fine from 3 metres, (I sit about 9 ft away and have a 42"), but it depends on how much presence you want the TV to have in the room. Again, the tilting bracket mentioned above will help it less dominate the room when not being used.

Frankly I'd avoid putting the TV above or near any heat source.

Hmmmm....looks like that's settled it for me then, all I need to do now is find a ay of making it look good in the corner of the room without the speakers taking over due to their depth.
do you still use the gas fire??
Well I've just moved house and the gas fire I have is going because it's very dated however I'm quite happy to put the heating on or stick another jumper on but it's the Mrs that uses the fire so we will be replacing it with a new one.

I did see a company that sells fires witha soft heat system whereby there is ducting that channels the heat to the sides etc. of the chimney stack, however the fires cost £3500 each....rather spend it on a something else.

I may change the layout of the room so the TV will be on the opporsite wall to the fire....hopefully that should work quite well.

I have mine above the fireplace,I just use the heating instead of fire,my lounge is very small so I don`t have any other option and can`t use the fire anyway,I have a 30 month old daughter so I couldn`t and with my floorstanding speakers each side of fire,I can`t get a fireguard so it stays off constantly.Like I say I`m very limited for where tp place things.

Space is always a issue when seting up your system, I know I drove my Wife mad when we were moving House as I would constantly be figuring out where the Plaz etc would go as where She was counting Bedrooms etc LOL.

well my plasma is above the fireplace, at first it seemed quite high but simply got use to it, the gas fire hasnt been used for years before we had it, but the bricks behind it were all dried out so had some trouble fitting the wall bracket, but we got there in the end... then again it does depend on the height of your fireplace i guess, aswell as not using it..

I'm not that tall!....however the fires I were looking at are only 30cm tall and can be installed about 15-20cm off the floor. Have a look here to see what I mean:

My other option was to have this type of fire with the TV above and set back as if it were on a mantle. I'll probably have to go to the shop and stick a thermometer above the fire and see what the temperature gets to!

Well I guess since that site says

"Can be used with plasma or LCD TV above"

you'd have a pretty solid case should your TV go all wonky when used as they suggest.

I had a similar idea of taking out fire place altogether so my wall is flat than make a false chimney breast stuckout say a foot, then make a recess for tv,so then i have a false wall to drop cables down and make a little hole at the side to thread cables out the other side to receiver etc..... If i was to put my tv above fire surround as it is my tv would be 4ft from floor and viewing distance would be about 9-10ft would this be ok?
