Hi,

Is that £400 each or for the speakers and AV combined?

hmmm might be un-reasonable but about £400 for the A/v AND 5.1 speakers...

ive noticed a couple of Onkyo systems around the £300 mark, but havent a clue if they are any good or if theyve got enough ports etc etc?? quite a novice as you can tell.$

£400 is probably pushing it,

If that is your combined budget then push to £500.

I would advise to go for some of the slightly older units as they will be slashed in price but there is nothing wrong with them!

thats how i got my amp!, it was end of line and i picked it up for £250 yet it was fetching up to £600.

£250 will buy you a decent amp, Onkyo or yamaha for that price.

Speaker is a bit more tricky.

Considering your budget is tight, I would suggest that you buy a reasonable A/V amp like the Denon 1911 or Yamaha 667 both are 3D capable. Then maybe have a look on fleabay for a set of speakers which can be found for the rest of your budget like these for example... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Wharfedale-DIAMOND-9-HCP-Speaker-System-/330541733252?pt=UK_AudioVideoElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_HiFiSpeakers&hash=item4cf5d29584 If you go down this route you can always sell the speakers back on fleabay when you can afford better. Normally though it would be best to audition the speakers with the amp. Another option is to buy better speakers but go for a 2.1, 3.1 or 5.0 system for now, until you can afford to either buy the centre, surrounds & or the subwoofer to match the rest.

On the spaker side of things,

If you dont want to go down the second hand route, have a look at the Jamo A102HCS5, They have got good reviews here and were top of there class at a point.

They were fetching around £300 but now you can find them for around £200 so makes them a very good buy!

Just a suggestion (im sure other will correct me)

I think with your budget you should go for the Jamo A102HCS5 speakers and the Sony STR-DH800 AV.

The AV is around £250 now and is probably the best 3D AV ou can get for that price. it has 3 opticals and 4 HDMI's which is very good as the norm at this price tends to 1 optical and 3 HDMI's!

If you look hard enough you should be able to manage both for around £450

I think you may have the model number wrong, i believe it's the Sony DH810 http://www.whathifi.com/review/sony-str-dh810 which as you say can be found for £249.95

You can get bargain clearance items to reduce your costs on last years 3D capable A/V Reciever Amps

For example:

The others i mentioned can be had for a similar price check out Sevenoaks http://www.sevenoakssoundandvision.co.uk/clearance.aspx

& Richer Sounds http://www.richersounds.com/products/home-cinema/home-cinema-separates/av-receivers
